A last-minute bid to solve the Adam Reynolds contract stand-off has failed and the Rabbitohs captain goes into tonight's season opener against Melbourne<\/a> a disillusioned man.<\/p>\n

Both Reynolds and Souths<\/a> were hoping to put the matter to bed before the season began to ensure their prized halfback<\/a> had his future secure and would be able to enter the game without the added pressure on his shoulders.<\/p>\n

But as late as yesterday, neither side was willing to budge in what has become something of a Mexican stand-off.<\/p>\n

Souths want to only give Reynolds – a local junior coming into his 10th season with the club with over 200 games in the red and green – a one-year contract extension.<\/p>\n

Reynolds wants two years with an option of a third – but the club aren't willing to take that risk on a player who turns 31 later this year.<\/p>\n

Even Souths' influential coach Wayne Bennett weighed in, declaring: "I don't want to see Adam leave. I can't see Adam Reynolds at any other club and I've made that clear."<\/p>\n

All eyes will be on the Souths playmaker in the big kick-off tonight – and he will rightly feel he has the weight of the world on his shoulders.<\/p>\n
