Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin<\/a> could be shown the door at the end of the season if the club fails to make the top eight, according to veteran AFL reporter Jake Niall.<\/p>\n

Goodwin's position has become increasingly under pressure after Melbourne shocked the league and made it to a preliminary final back in 2018.<\/p>\n

Since that season, the Demons have finished 17th and ninth on the ladder, with the poor finishes putting the spotlight squarely on Goodwin's position as senior coach.<\/p>\n

While Goodwin is said to have a "water-tight" contract which will see him get paid through 2022 if he is dismissed at the end of the season, Niall said the contract won't force Melbourne's hand.<\/p>\n

"There's probably no coach in the competition (with as much pressure)," he told Wide World of Sports.<\/p>\n

"If they don't make finals, I'd suggest he won't be there next year unless he has very extenuating circumstances."<\/p>\n

According to Niall, Melbourne's strong financial position means that the club will not be concerned about a hefty payout.<\/p>\n

"If Melbourne are to part company with him this year, it'll all be decided by results, then they would have to pay him for 2022, that's the bottom line," he said.<\/p>\n

"One thing Melbourne have got right is that financially they're in very good (shape), in as strong a position as they've had in the last 30 years. <\/p>\n

"They were an unassisted club during COVID-19, which was unthinkable five or six years ago. <\/p>\n

"It is very much a now situation. They probably over-achieved in 2018 and it gave a slightly misleading picture of where Melbourne were at."<\/p>\n

Goodwin and the Demons will open their 2021 season by hosting Fremantle at the MCG in Round One on March 20.<\/p>\n
