Carlton skipper Patrick Cripps<\/a> says his side must earn the respect of the competition after just one rival captain picked the Blues to make the finals in 2021.<\/p>\n

Following the club's big-money signings of Zac Williams<\/a> and Adam Saad, Carlton has been the hot favourite to climb up the ladder and knock on the door of a top eight spot.<\/p>\n

Carlton has not made the finals since 2013, a year where it actually finished ninth but the made the eight due to Essendon being kicked out of the finals after their supplements scandal.<\/p>\n

While the finals snub in the AFL's annual captains survey is sure to serve as motivation, Cripps said it wasn't a surprise to see that his side was not rated highly by rival leaders.<\/p>\n

"It's one of those things, you've got to earn the respect of other clubs. They don't hand you finals games," he told AFL.com.au.<\/p>\n

"We feel like we've had a really good pre-season and we're set for a big year, but at the end of the day we've got to go out there and get some momentum and try to earn the respect of the other clubs by playing our way."<\/p>\n

Cripps, who is out of contract at the end of the year, has been linked with moves back to Western Australia, but said he is confident that an extension with Carlton will be signed<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Despite being one of the best midfielders in the game, the 25-year-old said he won't request money that works to the detriment of the club's cap flexibility moving forward.<\/p>\n

"You want what is best for the club, so it is about how we are we going to put ourselves in a position to be a good club, and a great club, going forward for a long period of time," he told the Herald Sun.<\/p>\n

"Going through it all, there is no rush. It (contract extension) will happen, it's just a matter of making sure we have got all the details (sorted)."<\/p>\n

Cripps and the Blues will open their season with the traditional MCG blockbuster against Richmond on March 18.<\/p>\n
