The Broncos<\/a> are hot finals chances and certainties not to win the wooden spoon, feisty hooker Jake Turpin says.<\/p>\n

Under new coach and club icon Kevin Walters, the shamed Broncos are recovering from the first last-placed finish in Brisbane's history.<\/p>\n

Turpin, who due to injury played just six games in a dismal 2020, was bullish about the powerful club's redemption campaign. Few are tipping the Broncos to play finals but the players have other ideas.<\/p>\n

"We won't win the wooden spoon, I'll tell you that right now," Turpin told reporters in Brisbane.<\/p>\n

"We've got a lot of confidence in ourselves at the moment and we're really excited to get out there and show everyone on Friday night that we're definitely going to be a team that can easily make the top eight this year."<\/p>\n

Turpin said that he intended to play a key hand in the revival.<\/p>\n

"It was very frustrating for me last year," Turpin said.<\/p>\n

"Breaking my leg in round three, spending some time out and then coming back and only making another three games and breaking my hand.<\/p>\n

"It was definitely a tough year for me last year but I'm really excited to start the year off well again and do all I can to turn this team into a top eight side this year."<\/p>\n

Turpin will be alongside Jamayne Isaako, Anthony Milford and Brodie Croft in the Broncos' spine for their season-opening clash against Parramatta on Friday<\/a>. Croft won a somewhat controversial selection call<\/a> over youngster Tom Dearden for the halfback spot, with Immortal Andrew Johns branding the move "surprising"<\/a>.<\/p>\n

"He's a real good organiser, he's got a lot of experience organising teams and he's been in some big games throughout his career," Turpin said of Croft, who struggled in his first season at Brisbane last year.<\/p>\n

"He hasn't had a real long career so far but he's played in some pretty big semi-finals, so he's been there, done that and got a lot of experience to bring to our side."<\/p>\n

Turpin will also hope to benefit from the go-forward of prop Tevita Pangai Jr, still at the club after a bizarre 2020 in which he was sacked then reinstated after breaching biosecurity rules by attending a barber shop opening.<\/p>\n

"Tevita's looking fit as, as fit as I've seen him since I've been at the club," Turpin said.<\/p>\n

"He's ready to go and he's really excited to turn this year around as well."<\/p>\n
