Supercars team boss Tim Blanchard<\/a> says the series needs to take a good look at the aerodynamics issues that are preventing cars from racing each other.<\/p>\n

Last weekend's season-opener at Bathurst<\/a> was followed by complaints from the drivers that the aero-wash made it next to impossible to follow another car closely.<\/p>\n

Race winner Shane van Gisbergen<\/a> was highly critical of the situation immediately after his victory, noting that his win was down to strategy rather than the ability to make a pass on track.<\/p>\n

Cam Waters had the lead in Sunday's race, and although van Gisbergen had what appeared to be the faster car, he simply couldn't pass Waters. The Triple Eight driver was only able to take the lead by passing Waters at the pit stops.<\/p>\n

"Unfortunately, you can't battle on track so we had to try to win it in the pitlane, and we did," van Gisbergen said after the race.<\/p>\n

Blanchard, who runs the CoolDrive Racing entry for Tim Slade, said his driver reported much the same problem when trailing Will Davison in Saturday's race.<\/p>\n

"Yeah, massively. The aero wash on the cars at the moment is a major issue for the sport," Blanchard told Wide World of Sports.<\/p>\n

"We caught Will quite quickly, but once you're within half a second or so you're kind of stuck.<\/p>\n

"It's something we need to look into as a sport, it makes overtaking very difficult. Bathurst is pretty bad across the top, because there's a lot of aero influence across the top. It's definitely one of the worst circuits we go to.<\/p>\n

"In theory, Bathurst should provide plenty of passing opportunities because of the layout of the track, but as we saw on the weekend, you effectively hit a wall when you're close behind another car, which makes it hard to race properly."<\/p>\n

The weekend also saw the Supercars season launched by a double-header at Mt Panorama, replacing the long-standing season opener around the streets of Adelaide.<\/p>\n

The South Australian government withdrew its support for the event last year, ending the 22-year run.<\/p>\n

Blanchard said that while a sprint-race at Bathurst was a good way to start the season, it's not something he'd like to see long-term, preferring to keep Mt Panorama for the Bathurst 1000.<\/p>\n

"The way things panned out it wasn't a bad option, but Adelaide in itself was such a terrific event that was well supported by the fans," he explained.<\/p>\n

"It's very hard to replace that event."<\/p>\n

"I think we've got enough tracks in Australia to only use Bathurst once a year. With COVID, and Adelaide pulling out, opening this year at Bathurst was a sensible move, and it's important to start with a world-class circuit.<\/p>\n

"But long-term, we need to start with a marquee event somewhere else and just keep Bathurst for the October race."<\/p>\n
