Wales star Rhys Webb's career could be over \ufeffafter the halfback was banned for four years for testing positive for human growth hormone.<\/p>\n

The 35-year-old returned the positive test while playing rugby<\/a> in France for Biarritz and was provisionally suspended last July.<\/p>\n

Webb, who played 40 Tests for Wales and two for the British and Irish Lions<\/a>, has maintained his innocence but the findings were confirmed by \ufeffthe French Anti-Doping Agency following B sample analysis.<\/p>\n

The backdated ban will expire in 2027 and Webb is also prohibited from working in sport as a coach or in administration.<\/p>\n

Webb, who scored the first of his nine Test tries against the Wallabies in 2014, posted a social media statement blaming "incompetencies" on behalf of his lawyer.<\/p>\n

"The sanction imposed on Rhys Webb is not final, and we have immediately instructed a lawyer at the Conseil d'Etat to lodge an appeal to overturn the AFLD's decision," it read.<\/p>\n

"In the meantime, Rhys wishes to reaffirm his innocence, pointing out that he has never undergone any other disciplinary procedure, of any kind, during his long career as a professional athlete and has never used any doping product, growth hormone in particular."<\/p>\n

But a statement from the French Anti-Doping Agency\ufeff reiterated that Webb is prohibited from "participating, in any capacity whatsoever, in a competition authorised or organised by an organisation that is a signatory to the World Anti-Doping Code or one of its members."<\/p>\n
