Former Hawthorn<\/a> president Jeff Kennett has clashed with Nine's Caroline Wilson<\/a> as the pair debated \ufeffthe way former Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson<\/a> exited the club.<\/p>\n

Kennett has remained vocal across the media despite leaving his role as president at the end of 2022, when he was replaced by 'Hawks of Change' candidate Andy Gowers.<\/p>\n

The former Victorian premier has continued to express his disapproval at the way Hawthorn handled his replacement, as his preferred successor, Peter Nankivell, missed out.<\/p>\n

In the debate on Nine's Footy Classified<\/em> on Monday night, \ufeffKennett also expressed his anger towards Hawthorn for the mismanagement of his life membership award, which has been put on hold due to the club's ongoing racism saga, which includes Clarkson.<\/p>\n

Kennett declared that the withholding of his life membership was "petty and vindictive" on Monday night.<\/p>\n

But the main questioning that Wilson had for the former president surrounded the poorly-handled exit of Clarkson.<\/p>\n

The original plans were for Clarkson to be replaced at the end of 2022 by former player Sam Mitchell as senior coach, but things changed a year earlier.<\/p>\n

In the middle of the 2021 season, Clarkson approached the Hawthorn board and decided that it would be his last season at the helm.<\/p>\n

He then walked away with a $1 million payout and turned down offers to mentor Mitchell in his first year as coach.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Wilson pressed Kennett on whether he regretted the way the situation was handled, and if \ufeffthe "relationship split" with Clarkson still weighs on his mind.<\/p>\n

"No. What do you mean a 'relationship split'? The fact that we decided to have a new coach?," Kennett said on Nine's Footy Classified.<\/em><\/p>\n

But Wilson was quick to correct where the supposed breakdown between the former coach and president has occurred.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"No, the fact that Alastair now won't attend official reunions at the club," Wilson said.<\/p>\n

"He's gone to private reunions with his players, but we won't attend official reunions.<\/p>\n

"He left the club in acrimony."<\/p>\n

Kennett disagreed.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"No. We had an agreement with Alastair that he was going to coach through until 2022 (and) we were going to talk to him at the end of 2021," he said.<\/p>\n

"He came to the football department halfway through 2021 and said, 'I want to talk about my contract'.<\/p>\n

"We honoured Clarko, we wanted him to finish his term and continue as a mentor for Sam.<\/p>\n

"We did pay Clarko $1 million. We thought after 14 or 15 years as senior coach, and contributing to four premierships, he was entitled to (leave on his own terms)."<\/p>\n

Wilson then pushed back again.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"You've seen this happen before, didn't you have the foresight to see there would be problems?," she asked.<\/p>\n

"We made a decision; Alastair had a contract until 2022, we said we weren't going to extend that for a range of reasons," Kennett said.<\/p>\n

"But we were prepared for him to continue in a mentoring role, and we'd pay him, while Sam (Mitchell) had that first year as coach."<\/p>\n

Sam Mitchell has been in charge of the Hawks since the start of 2022, with his side currently sitting in 13th on the ladder with an 8-8 record.\ufeff<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
