Jude Bellingham<\/a> has avoided an immediate ban after the England<\/a> midfielder appeared to make an offensive gesture during his team's European Football Championship win over Slovakia on Monday (AEST)<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Bellingham will be available for England's game against Switzerland on Sunday for a place in the semi finals after UEFA<\/a> on Friday night imposed a one-game ban but said it \u201cis not immediately enforced and is subject to a probationary period\u201d of a year.<\/p>\n

The Real Madrid midfielder will have to pay a fine of $48,200.<\/p>\n

UEFA said the punishment was \u201cfor violating the basic rules of decent conduct\u201d in the Slovakia game.<\/p>\n

Bellingham seemed to make a gesture with his hand toward his crotch after scoring an overhead kick to level the score before England went on to win 2-1 in extra time.<\/p>\n

Bellingham\u2019s goal with about 80 seconds left in the game saved England from a humiliating exit in the first knockout round.<\/p>\n

Bellingham previously denied suggestions he gestured toward the Slovakia bench.<\/p>\n

\u201cAn inside joke gesture towards some close friends who were at the game. Nothing but respect for how that Slovakia team played tonight,\u201d Bellingham wrote on X on Monday.<\/p>\n

UEFA also fined England a total of $11,900 for crowd disturbances and the \u201clighting of fireworks\u201d during the match.<\/p>\n

Five years ago, Cristiano Ronaldo \u2014 then playing for Juventus \u2014 and Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone were each fined $22,700 by UEFA for making obscene gestures during their Champions League matchup.<\/p>\n

Disgraced former Spanish soccer chief Luis Rubiales was also involved in a similar incident during the final of the Women\u2019s World Cup final last August. He grabbed his crotch as a victory gesture while Queen Letizia of Spain and 16-year-old Princess Sof\u00eda were standing nearby.<\/p>\n

That offence was overshadowed soon after when Rubiales kissed Spain forward Jenni Hermoso on the lips without her consent. Rubiales was barred by FIFA from working in soccer until after the men\u2019s 2026 World Cup.<\/p>\n

In another case on Friday, UEFA banned Turkey defender Merih Demiral for two games after he made a hand sign associated with an ultra-nationalist group while celebrating Turkey's 2-1 win over Austria.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
