Warriors<\/a> icon Shaun Johnson has barked back at "savage" social media trolls in the wake of his injury-riddled start to the NRL<\/a> season.<\/p>\n

The star halfback recently returned from a four-week pectoral injury lay-off and will now spend another four weeks on the sidelines with an Achilles injury.<\/p>\n

Johnson is in the twilight of his career and injury woes have cast doubt over his playing future, leading some social media commenters to call for his retirement.<\/p>\n

"Just like you I see the comments and damn some of you are savage," he wrote on Instagram.<\/p>\n

"If you're one of those who find comfort in slamming others online, I hope everything is OK.<\/p>\n

"Your words don't carry weight this time around, but they could for the next person you choose to spew your negativity on. Think before you type.<\/p>\n

"On the other hand, to those who have checked in or sent a message I appreciate you."<\/p>\n

The 33-year-old made light of some of the comments, taking ownership of the "Short ball Johnson" jibe.<\/p>\n

"Perspective is key, I'm at a stage where 80min doesn't define me like it once did," he continued.<\/p>\n

"Still get to live a pretty cool life with the best people in it.<\/p>\n

"Short ball Johnson won't be on the field for a bit. I'm frustrated but will be doing everything to get back to the level I know I can."<\/p>\n

Johnson's post on Instagram garnered plenty of support from teammates, other fellow NRL players, and sports personalities.<\/p>\n
