Hungary forward Barnab\u00e1s Varga was in hospital in a stable condition after a horror incident during his team's final group match at the European Championship.<\/p>\n

The Group A game against Scotland was halted for nearly 10 minutes so Varga could get treatment after colliding with opposing goalkeeper Angus Gunn.<\/p>\n

Varga's teammates held up blankets to shield the player as he was tended to by medical staff, while everyone looked on in concern.<\/p>\n

Both sets of fans applauded when Varga was stretchered off.<\/p>\n

\u201cBarnab\u00e1s Varga\u2019s condition is stable!\u201d the Hungarian football federation later wrote on X.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Ferencv\u00e1ros player is currently in one of the hospitals in Stuttgart. We will inform you immediately if there is any news about its status.\u201d<\/p>\n

A dramatic stoppage-time goal saw Hungary beat Scotland 1-0 to wreck its opponent\u2019s hopes of reaching the knockout stage of a major tournament for the first time in its history.<\/p>\n

Late substitute Kevin Csoboth scored his first international goal in the 10th minute of stoppage time to see Hungary secure third spot in Group A, behind Germany and Switzerland.<\/p>\n

Hungary now faces an anxious wait to see if its three points will be enough to reach the round of 16 at Euros 2024 as one of the four best third-place teams.<\/p>\n

It might not know until Thursday when the final round of group games finishes.<\/p>\n

Germany topped the group after a late goal saw it rescue a 1-1 draw against Switzerland.<\/p>\n

If Hungary does progress, it appeared unlikely that forward Varga will not take part.<\/p>\n

Despite both teams needing the win in Stuttgart, chances were few and far between.<\/p>\n

Scotland was dominating possession but not doing much with it and struggling to break Hungary down.<\/p>\n

But Hungary started to get a foothold in the match and almost took the lead four minutes from the break, when Willi Orb\u00e1n\u2019s header \u2014 from a clever Dominik Szoboszlai free kick \u2014 hit the crossbar.<\/p>\n

Szoboszlai almost scored himself with the final kick of the half but he couldn\u2019t keep his shot down and it flew over the crossbar.<\/p>\n

Scotland ended the half with 64 per cent possession but no attempts on goal whatsoever. Hungary had five.<\/p>\n

Steve Clarke\u2019s side finally had a shot in the 53rd but Ch\u00e9 Adams curled his effort way over the bar.<\/p>\n

Csoboth was brought on in the 86th minute and he almost had an immediate impact as he hit the far post from a tight angle.<\/p>\n

Both goalkeepers had to make saves in a chaotic 10 minutes of stoppage time before Csoboth snatched the win.<\/p>\n

Csoboth started the counterattack and, with Scotland outnumbered, picked out an unmarked Roland Sallai before sprinting into the area to receive the return pass and slot into the near corner, sparking wild celebrations among the Hungary players and fans.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
