Cate Campbell<\/a> has fired another shot in her war of words with US swimming<\/a> legend Michael Phelps<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In coverage of the American Olympic Swimming trials last week, NBC aired Phelps' reaction to watching Campbell's "sore loser" comments she made on the Today<\/em> show during last year's World Championships<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In NBC's piece, Phelps \ufeffrevealed he'd never seen the clip but urged the Americans to "watch it every day" in the lead up to Paris.<\/p>\n

"If somebody said that to me, I would lose it. I would literally make them eat every word they just said about me," he said.<\/p>\n

"Some people have done it \u2013 (South African) Chad le Clos, (Ian) Thorpe, \ufeffyou guys have all talked shit about me, and I had the last laugh.<\/p>\n

"For the Americans, if you see what I just saw … I would watch that thing every single day to give me that little extra bit of oomph."<\/p>\n

American 100m breaststroke world record holder and gold medallist Lily King last week said the clip was "amusing"<\/a>.\ufeff<\/p>\n

In her latest appearance on Today<\/em> on Monday morning, Campbell, who retired from swimming after narrowly missing out on qualifying for her fifth Games<\/a>, said it was slanging matches like these that built rivalries and made sport great.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Who knew a couple of comments said in jest (could) have stirred up all this trouble. But ultimately, that's kind of what we love about sport," she said.<\/p>\n

"It's the rivalries that get everyone going that gets the fire in the belly.<\/p>\n

\"Cate<\/p>\n

"Australia has had such a long rivalry with the US and a little bit of trash talk never hurt anyone."<\/p>\n

Campbell then referred to the 2000 Sydney Olympics, where the Aussie men's 4x100m relay team famously strummed air guitars after winning gold over the Americans<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In the lead up to the Games, Gary Hall had fired off a brazen remark in the direction of the Australians, declaring the Americans would "smash them like guitars".<\/p>\n

In an ironic twist, it was Hall that Ian Thorpe reeled in during the anchor leg to hand the Americans their first ever Olympic defeat in the event.<\/p>\n

"But then you know what, (they) all got out of the pool and we all shook hands and said, 'my goodness, what a spectacle'," Campbell said.<\/p>\n

The rivalry between the Aussies and the US is the strongest in world swimming. Campbell said it was a "bit of a David versus Goliath" situation.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"We're up against a country of 350 million people \u2013 there's 27 million people here in Australia.<\/p>\n

"It's so satisfying when we can get up over the big dogs … and Australia loves being the underdog. We thrive on that.<\/p>\n

"Maybe the Americans thrive on the fire in their belly and getting really patriotic."<\/p>\n

But ever the Aussie way, Campbell \ufeffsaid she regretted bringing the American national anthem \u2013 the Star Spangled Banner \u2013 into her original dig, and invited the US to tear into Advance Australia Fair.<\/p>\n

"I know I brought in the Star Spangled Banner, and that was a big mistake, but if you want to have a go at Advance Australia Fair, I kind of don't mind," she said with a laugh.<\/p>\n

"We have one of the least sexy words in the English language in it – girt. That probably only comes behind words like moist and secrete. Go for your life.<\/p>\n

"But you know what? I'm still a very proud Australian and I will sing that anthem so proudly for the rest of my life."<\/p>\n

Today host Karl Stefanovic described Phelps as an "absolute tosser", and invited Campbell to send him one last parting message.<\/p>\n

"There's no message … I'm doing the talking, he's doing the talking, but the Australian Dolphins and the US swim team, they're going to be doing the action in the swimming pool."<\/p>\n
