N\ufeffadia Comaneci's first perfect 10 in Olympic<\/a> gymnastics history was so unexpected that the digital scoreboard could not display the result.<\/p>\n

Twisting, flipping and swinging, the 14-year-old from Romania took to the uneven bars in the compulsory portion of the team event and redefined perfection.<\/p>\n

"Gorgeous routine, beautiful, and the crowd loves it," said Olympic gymnast Cathy Rigby on US television.<\/p>\n

But because the digital scoreboard could only display three digits, Comaneci's perfect 10 appeared as 1.00.<\/p>\n

Despite Comaneci's faultless performance, Romania only won silver in the team event.<\/p>\n

But the Onesti-born youngster would achieve another six perfect 10s in Montreal en route to gathering three gold medals, starring in the all-round, uneven bars and balance beam events.<\/p>\n

"I thought I did the bar routine pretty well, but that was all," Comaneci told ESPN decades later.<\/p>\n

"As I landed the dismount I was already thinking about the next event. The music was already playing for us to march on to beam, so I didn't even look at the scoreboard.<\/p>\n

"All of a sudden there was a big commotion, so I turned to see what was happening. The scoreboard swung around, and under my number, 73, there was a score of 1.00. We were all confused for a moment. We thought maybe something was wrong with the scoreboard, that they had meant to give the routine a 9.9 and it had gotten stuck!"<\/p>\n

Comaneci admitted that while "gymnasts aim for perfection", she "never thought about the score".<\/p>\n

"If that's what's in your mind, it will probably mess you up," she said.<\/p>\n

"I just remember trying to stay focused. It takes very little to break your concentration, and then you make mistakes."<\/p>\n

In Munich four years earlier, controversy had broken out when \ufeffOlga Korbut of Belarus was not given a perfect 10, rather a 9.8, after producing an inconceivable move that would become known as the Korbut Flip<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Comaneci won another two Olympic gold medals in Moscow in 1980, triumphing on the balance beam and the floor.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
