Romania's David Popovici has put Kyle Chalmers<\/a> on notice ahead of the Olympic Games after coming within 0.08 of a second of the 100m freestyle world record at the European Championships.<\/p>\n

The record, which was formerly held by Popovici, was broken by China's Pan Zhanle at the World Championships in Doha in February.<\/p>\n

Popovici's 46.88s swim was the third fastest in the history of the event, meaning the 19-year-old now holds two of the top three 100m freestyle times ever recorded.<\/p>\n

Chalmers, who is Australia's fastest qualifier in the event, swam 47.75s at the Olympic selection trials in Brisbane last week, having undergone regular cortisone injections and physio sessions to compete at the meet.<\/a><\/p>\n

The 25-year-old equalled his personal best of 47.08s at the Tokyo Olympics when he claimed the silver medal behind America's Caeleb Dressel<\/a>. \ufeff<\/p>\n

Dressel will not defend his title in Paris after touching third at the US Olympic swimming trials this week, just eight months after announcing his retirement.<\/p>\n

Popovici is one of five swimmers to have broken the 47s mark in the event.<\/p>\n

"And looks like I should have a little bit more confidence in myself, I guess, because I've gotten really close without really planning for it. So yeah, it's still refreshing."<\/p>\n

Popovici will also face Australia's Max Giuliani and Thomas Neill in the 200m freestyle in Paris, after winning the European Championships with a time of 1m 43.13s.<\/p>\n

The time was 2.52 seconds faster than Lithuania's Danas Rapsys, while Giuliani qualified for Paris with a time of 1m 45.83s.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Popovici's swim was the fifth fastest 200m time ever and he turned 0.04 of a second under world record pace at the 100m mark.<\/p>\n

Michael Phelps and Germany's Paul Biedermann\ufeff are the only two men to beat the time, with both times recorded during the super suit era.<\/p>\n
