Eddie Jones'<\/a> second stint as Japan coach got off to a rough start as the Brave Blossoms were battered \ufeff52-17 by England in Tokyo on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Jones controversially returned to the helm at Japan<\/a> after bailing on the Wallabies following a disastrous 2023 Rugby World Cup campaign.\ufeff<\/p>\n

England – who Jones led to the 2019 World Cup final – scored four tries in each half, all to different players, in hot and humid conditions that made ball handling difficult.<\/p>\n

"It was a pretty tough game for us. England are a strong, powerful team," Jones said.<\/p>\n

"But I was really pleased with our set piece work which kept us in the game for a long period of time. There is real potential here for Japanese rugby."<\/p>\n

It was England's first official Test against the Brave Blossoms in Japan \ufeffand went as expected.<\/p>\n

Jones fielded a starting XV that averaged only 11 caps as England tuned up well for a two Test tour of New Zealand.<\/p>\n

It was a pleasing performance for England coach Steve Borthwick, who previously served as Jones' assistant.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Japan are a fantastic team. We knew they would be well drilled and we obviously know Eddie very well. We couldn't have more respect for him as a person and a coach," England captain Jamie George said.<\/p>\n

"Japan played with very high tempo and I think they will be very successful over the next few years."\ufeff<\/p>\n

Charlie Ewels' red card took some of the shine off for England at the National Stadium.<\/p>\n

Ewels may not travel on to New Zealand after he was red carded for a dangerous ruck clear out into the knee of Japan captain Michael Leitch.<\/p>\n

Ewels had been on the field only nine minutes.<\/p>\n

He was originally yellow carded in the 73rd minute and it was upgraded to red after a video review.<\/p>\n

He faces a disciplinary hearing after becoming the first England men's player to be sent off twice.<\/p>\n

The other red was against Ireland in 2022.<\/p>\n

Japan, with eight new caps in the 23, started at a lightning pace without being able to make the final pass.<\/p>\n

England didn't waste chances in the 22, scoring the first try when flanker Chandler Cunningham-Smith barged over in the 14th minute in his first Test start.<\/p>\n

Flyhalf Marcus Smith was the next try scorer, worked into a gap off a long lineout throw.<\/p>\n

Smith's cut out pass gave winger Immanuel Feyi-Waboso the third try, and Smith's cross field kick put centre Henry Slade on the scoreboard right on halftime as England led 26-3.<\/p>\n

Scrumhalf Alex Mitchell eyed a gap off a ruck and scored minutes into the second half, then set up a try for No.8 Ben Earl.<\/p>\n

Smith was sinbinned for an early tackle on fullback Yoshitaka Yazaki, the university student who doesn't play for a professional side, but Japan didn't receive a penalty try.<\/p>\n

Smith, who kicked four of six conversions, didn't return, as he was replaced by Fin Smith.<\/p>\n

Even down to 14 men, England scored through replacement scrumhalf Harry Randall for 45-3 but the substitutions and intensity affected the visitors' rhythm.<\/p>\n

Japan touched down twice in three minutes through outside backs Koga Nezuka and Takuya Yamasawa, a late callup playing his first Test in seven years.<\/p>\n

After Ewels chopped Leitch, workaholic flanker Sam Underhill scored in a maul.<\/p>\n

"I am very proud of the way we went about our business," George said.<\/p>\n

"We have got some really talented backs with a lot of speed and we were able to show that."<\/p>\n

England next faces New Zealand on July 6 in Dunedin.<\/p>\n
