Opening batsman David Warner<\/a> has conceded his decision to play in the final two Tests of the recent series against India wasn't in the best interests of his groin injury.<\/p>\n

Warner suffered the injury in a one-day international in November and missed the opening matches of the Test series.<\/p>\n

He returned for the third Test in Sydney,<\/a> where he scored 5 and 13, before making 1 and 48 in the fourth match in Brisbane.<\/a><\/p>\n

He was named in the squad for this month's tour of South Africa,<\/a> which was subsequently cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns.<\/a><\/p>\n

Speaking ahead of his domestic return for New South Wales, Warner has admitted the decision to return for the SCG Test was a mistake.<\/p>\n

"I made the call to play those Test matches, I felt like I needed to be out there and help the guys," he said. "If I'm looking back in hindsight, I probably wouldn't have done that.<\/p>\n

"It put me back a little bit, but at the end of the day we've had this time to heal and with South Africa being called off it gave me a bit more time."<\/p>\n

Pressed on whether or not he regretted his decision to play in Sydney and Brisbane, Warner said the best option for his body would have been to miss the matches.<\/p>\n

"From an injury perspective, yes," he explained.<\/p>\n

"If I'm thinking about myself and the injury, I probably would have said no.<\/p>\n

"But I did what I felt was best for the team, and me being out there opening the batting was, I felt, the best thing for the team."<\/p>\n

Warner has subsequently revealed it will take six to nine months to fully recover<\/a> from the injury, but isn't yet considering giving up one form of the game in order to prolong his career.<\/p>\n

Having been a part of the victorious 2015 50-over World Cup side, the 34-year-old revealed he'd like another crack at the title in two years' time.<\/p>\n

"I'm not thinking of that end-date at all, for me it's all about the 2023 World Cup is where I would like to get to," Warner said.<\/p>\n

"We've got a good foundation there with the white-ball team, we've got a good opportunity to play that and win in India.<\/p>\n

"It's probably going to be the last for a few of us, and then it's a given that you just have to call it time, unless you're going to play until you're 41, it's time for the new guys to come through in that white-ball setup.<\/p>\n

"From a Test cricket point of view, I'd love to play as long as I can."<\/p>\n
