Fans and experts were left dismayed when Snicko technology overturned a Belgium<\/a> equaliser and caused major drama at the Euros.<\/p>\n

Referees at the major European international tournament can for the first time utilise a microchip implanted in the ball to help review decisions.<\/p>\n

But its debut came in the most controversial circumstances on Tuesday morning (AEST) when \ufeffRomelu Lukaku<\/a> thought he had drawn Belgium level with Slovakia in their group stage clash.<\/p>\n

In fact two Lukaku goals were ruled out by video review and Belgium fell to a stunning 1-0 loss in wild Group E scenes.<\/p>\n

\ufeffSlovakia struck in the seventh minute through forward Ivan Schranz then survived a string of misses by Belgium's record scorer Lukaku, whose two second-half goals were overturned after first being given by the match officials, and all that playmaker Kevin De Bruyne could create.<\/p>\n

The second of Lukaku's disallowed goals, however, caused uproar.<\/p>\n

\ufeffThe on-field officials initially awarded the goal to make it 1-1 in the 86th minute when Lo\u00efs Openda crossed to find Lukaku in the box, who put the ball in the back of the net.<\/p>\n

However as Belgium celebrated, the referee ran over to the sideline review screen to double check the play.<\/p>\n

The ball's microchip found Openda handled the ball before his decisive pass to Lukaku.<\/p>\n

Fans could see on the broadcast an infographic similar to the Snicko technology used in professional cricket.<\/p>\n

While the decision may have been correct, the use of the new technology did not sit well with many experts.<\/p>\n

English great Gary Lineker labelled the incident "bullshit"\ufeff, while former Socceroos player Scott McDonald was almost at a loss for words.<\/p>\n

"Look, I don't know any more," McDonald said on Optus Sport.<\/p>\n

"It's hard to say goal, no goal, then even having Snicko… what a waste of money that is.<\/p>\n

"We can see on the video anyway it was a clear handball."<\/p>\n

Former A-League star and Serbian international Milos Ninkovic was equally perplexed.<\/p>\n

"For me it's ridiculous, and I said so many times and I'm going to say it again, VAR is going to destroy the game. I have to say Scotty we are so happy that we are retired," he told Optus viewers.<\/p>\n

"The players, when they score, they will not celebrate any more because they don't know\u2026 VAR is just ridiculous."\ufeff<\/p>\n

The Belgium camp was more reserved in their post-game judgement.\ufeff<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to be at least a good, fair loser,\u201d Belgium coach Domenico Tedesco said about the match officials, who initially let the goal stand both times.<\/p>\n

"We trust these guys. We just have to accept it.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the final whistle, the Slovakia squad and staff danced in front of their fans in the 45,181 crowd at the Waldstadion as their choice of victory music, the modern football anthem \u201cFreed From Desire" boomed out.<\/p>\n
