Jude Bellingham scored to give England<\/a> a winning start at the European Championship by beating Serbia 1-0 on Monday morning (AEST).<\/p>\n

The Real Madrid<\/a> star put Gareth Southgate\u2019s team in front with a stooping header in the 13th minute at the Veltins Arena from Bukayo Saka\u2019s cross.<\/p>\n

The build-up to the game had been overshadowed by concerns about violence between rival supporters – with those fears realised when police rushed to separate brawling fans prior to the match.<\/p>\n

Social media footage showed men throwing chairs at each other outside a restaurant festooned with Serbian flags in the city.<\/p>\n

England fans were soon celebrating once the game got underway after Bellingham\u2019s early goal.<\/p>\n

"It\u2019s a great start for me personally to get my confidence up and to help the lads get the win is the most important thing,\u201d Bellingham said.<\/p>\n

"I think this team is still so new, gelling together with every game. Inside the changing room we'll be happy with that.<\/p>\n

"The first half shows why we can score against any team and the second half shows how we can keep a clean sheet against any team."<\/p>\n

Harry Kane<\/a> so nearly extended the lead in the second half when Serbia goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic pushed his far post header onto the underside of the bar.<\/p>\n

Kane set a record for his country by making his 23rd appearance at a major tournament.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a tough game. They are a tough team and have good players,\u201d the England captain said.<\/p>\n

"We stood up to it well and it is good to get the three points and (for us) to progress.<\/p>\n

"It\u2019s good that we got the win today.\u201d<\/p>\n

Victory sent England to the top of Group C after Denmark drew 1-1 with Slovenia in an earlier game, with Christian Eriksen scoring three years after suffering a cardiac arrest on the field at the last Euros.<\/p>\n

England was a beaten finalist at the last Euros in 2021, losing on penalties to Italy in the final three years ago<\/a>. It is one of the favourites this time around.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Serbia is playing in the Euros for the first time since 2000.<\/p>\n
