An Italian high jumper set a new record at the European Championships<\/a> this week \u2014 then faked an injury in front of the crowd before going on to pull springs from his shoe to justify his leaping power.<\/p>\n

Gianmarco Tamberi, 32, cleared the 2.37 metre jump – the highest ever completed at the European athletics<\/a> championships.<\/p>\n

After Tamberi landed, he began to limp and fell over causing concern among the crowd.<\/p>\n

He then took off his shoe \u2014 and pulled a small spring out of it, smiled and hopped to his feet, revealing the elaborate prank, which came weeks before he is set to compete at the Paris Olympics<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew I was in a superb shape and I proved it,\u201d Tamberi said. \u201cI pretended to be injured and hid springs in my shoes. I think some people fell for it. I did great things. Now it\u2019s time for the Olympics.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was full performance for the Italian. Tamberi bowed to Italy\u2019s president before and during the competition.<\/p>\n

Then came an embrace in the stands with his country\u2019s leader when the charismatic Olympic high jump champion won the European title and sealed his status as a favourite to defend gold at the Paris Games.<\/p>\n

Tamberi, styled in his preferred half-shaved beard, had already won the competition before he cleared a championship-record on his first attempt to add more lustre to his third title at the European athletics championships.<\/p>\n

Two Ukrainians, Vladyslav Lavskyy (2.29) and Oleh Doroshchuk (2.26), took silver and bronze, respectively.<\/p>\n
