F1<\/a> world champion J\ufeffacques Villeneuve has accused Daniel Ricciardo<\/a> of getting "personal" in his response to comments he made ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In the lead up to the race weekend, the 1997 champion said Ricciardo "can't cut it" and was underserving of his seat on the grid<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In response, Ricciardo stuck his RB<\/a> fifth on the grid for the race \u2013 far and away his strongest grand prix qualifying \ufeffperformance<\/a> of the season.<\/p>\n

Sky Sports commentator David Croft quipped at the end of qualifying the Aussie must have used Villeneuve's words as motivation.<\/p>\n

Speaking to media after qualifying, Ricciardo said Villeneuve had "been talking shit, but he always does".<\/p>\n

\"Daniel<\/p>\n

"I think he's hit his head a few too many times, so I don't know if he plays ice hockey or something," he told Planet F1.<\/p>\n

"I won't give him the time of day but all those people can suck it. I want to say more but we'll leave him behind."<\/p>\n

\ufeffBut Villeneuve \u2013 who was making a guest appearance as a pundit on Sky Sports, whose commentary and feed is re-broadcast in Australia via Fox Sports \u2013 clapped back again, suggesting Ricciardo's words were unprofessional.<\/p>\n

"His reaction was a little bit personal and he's a role model," the Canadian said.<\/p>\n

"Like all these 20 (drivers), you're at the top level. You have to be responsible in your answers, professional.<\/p>\n

\"Jacques<\/p>\n

"Kids are listening to you. You cannot make it personal.<\/p>\n

"I'm happy to have learned that I knocked myself out too often playing ice hockey.<\/p>\n

"Ultimately you will get criticism, you need a thick skin and I got under his skin but it got better for his driving.<\/p>\n

"But it's not enough, he needs to do more of this.<\/p>\n

"The pressure is on him. A lot of pressure was put on his shoulders, and it worked out.<\/p>\n

"He's had one good sprint race in Miami, one good qualifying. That's not enough for a full season, he needs more of that."<\/p>\n

\"Daniel<\/p>\n

Villeneuve was then asked if he stood by his comments from earlier in the weekend.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Yes. He was quick, but you're only as good as your last few results," he said. "We need the same thing for the next few race weekends."<\/p>\n

Ricciardo would overcome a five-second penalty for a false start to finish eighth<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In a chaotic wet-dry race in Montreal, Ricciardo was languishing out of the points in 12th when separate incidents right in front of him lifted him back into the points, before a move on Esteban Oco\ufeffn.<\/p>\n

Having finished fifth in the Miami sprint race, this was Ricciardo's first points finish in a grand prix for the \ufeffseason.<\/p>\n

"A little bit of relief at the end to get back into the points \u2013 for a while we'd dropped out," he told the official F1 website.<\/p>\n

"A few reasons\u2026 It was weird, because I got told I had a five-second penalty for a jump start, but I know I didn't jump the lights, so I was a bit confused.<\/p>\n

"I obviously questioned it but then I remember\u2026 I feel like when I was finding the revs for the start, I felt like \u2013 and I'm watching the lights \u2013 maybe the car was moving. Perhaps the clutch or something.<\/p>\n

"That obviously was a little bit of a back step and then when we pitted for an intermediate, we lost a few positions to the cars that stayed out, and then we weren't really able to get much out of that new inter.<\/p>\n

\"8th<\/p>\n

"The race was kind of getting away from us and then as it dried towards the end we were able to pick our way through a few cars.<\/p>\n

"I'm happy to finish with four points and get that. It was never going to be perfect, these conditions are so hard to get it right for everyone.<\/p>\n

"We'll obviously keep trying to clean it up, but I think in general, for a race like that, we walked away with some points. All in all, a fairly good weekend from start to finish and I won't complain \u2013 it was definitely a good one."<\/p>\n

The result was a timely boost for the Aussie, off the back of two blows in a matter of days that have put his future in the sport in doubt.<\/p>\n

First was the announcement from Red Bull that Sergio Perez had inked a two-year deal \u2013 although that's believed to be more of a one-plus-one than an outright two \u2013 to remain alongside Max Verstappen.<\/p>\n

Then only an hour before qualifying, his RB team confirmed they had activated a one-year option on Yuki Tsunoda's contract that will keep him at the team next season.<\/p>\n

It's widely believed gun Kiwi Liam Lawson, who deputised for Ricciardo during his lay-off last season with a broken hand, will be promoted into a race seat for next season.<\/p>\n
