Manny Pacquiao<\/a> will make a shock return to professional boxing<\/a>, with a WBC welterweight title fight against Mario Barrios is in the works, the great confirmed.<\/p>\n

Pacquiao, a former world champion who retired in 2021, spoke in Japan to promote a three-round boxing exhibition on July 28 against Japanese MMA fighter Chihiro Suzuki.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re still in under negotiation," the 45-year-old Pacquiao said of the possible Barrios fight for the WBC belt. \u201cAnd, we\u2019re talking about that. The fight is not materialised yet. But that negotiation is ongoing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pacquiao told ESPN: "I made history at 40 beating Keith Thurman and I feel at 45, I have a lot left in the game as I haven't taken a lot of punishment over the last few years. I want to go out making history."<\/p>\n

He hinted any eventual fight would be in November or December. But he said his mind was on Suzuki.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just want to say to everybody, this is not an exhibition. This is a fight, a three-round fight,\u201d Pacquiao said.<\/p>\n

"We will be looking for a knockout for this fight. So you better watch, and it\u2019s going to be a lot of action in the ring. And, of course, I\u2019ll do my best to win by knockout. Thank you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pacquiao lost in the run for the presidency of the Philippines in 2022.<\/p>\n

His career boxing record is 62 wins (39 KOs), 8 losses and 2 draws.<\/p>\n

Suzuki knows he is up against a legend.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn a way this is a challenge for me," he said. "It\u2019s a real honour to be able to fight against someone who has made history, so I will face him with respect. For me, it\u2019s one of the biggest challenges of my life and a test that I have to overcome.\u201d<\/p>\n

Barrios (29-2, 18 KOs) won the WBC interim welterweight title with a decision victory over Yordenis Ugas in September.<\/p>\n

Terence Crawford was named champion in recess last month as he sets out to campaign at 154 pounds and it's expected Barrios will be elevated to champion.<\/p>\n

Barrios, a 29-year-old from San Antonio, Texas, has won three on the trot since back-to-back losses to Gervonta Davis and Thurman in 2021-22.<\/p>\n

"I'm very excited at the possibility of this fight being made," Barrios said. "Manny Pacquiao is a future Hall of Famer, a legend and someone I looked up to growing up. To share the ring with him would be an honour and a dream come true."<\/p>\n
