IndyCar<\/a> front-runner Colton Herta was left confused by a call not to penalise Josef Newgarden for contact on lap one at Road America that sent the Andretti Global driver into a spin.<\/p>\n

Herta was a victim of the lap one melee when he tried to avoid the spinning cars of Linus Lundqvist and Marcus Armstrong.<\/p>\n

Armstrong was penalised for hitting his Chip Ganassi Racing teammate. However, Newgarden was not penalised for hitting Herta.<\/p>\n

Herta fell to the rear of the field and eventually recovered to sixth while Newgarden finished runner-up to Team Penske stablemate Will Power.<\/p>\n

"I just got punted by Josef," said Herta post-race.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I don't understand how it's a penalty for Armstrong right in front of him when he takes out Lundqvist, but I get the same thing done to me right here.<\/p>\n

"It wasn't even close. You see me slowing down, he doesn't even attempt to slow down. Just dumps me. How that isn't a penalty is beyond me.<\/p>\n

"I don't understand it, but that's the decision they made and we'll roll with it.<\/p>\n

"It's disappointing. It's disappointing because this is the third week in a row, whether it was self-inflicted or not, where I thought we should win and we didn't.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"The third week in a row where we've been so fast and we have relatively nothing to show for it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I'm not happy with sixth place with the car that we had today and the pace we had in the car. I don't know. I don't know what to say. Disappointing."<\/p>\n

Commentator Townsend Bell, who has 10 starts in the Indianapolis 500 to his name, said IndyCar officials may have reasoned Newgarden couldn't avoid the collision.<\/p>\n

Replay footage showed Newgarden come off the throttle a split second before hitting Herta, giving him little time to react.<\/p>\n

Another commentator, James Hinchcliffe, said Newgarden didn't have a "front-row seat" to the chaos unfolding in front of him and could be forgiven for that.<\/p>\n

"Newgarden gets out of the throttle, tries to hit the brakes. Diff (Leigh Diffey), you and I called it unavoidable contact," Bell explained.<\/p>\n

"Herta is like 'I don't understand how that's not a penalty'\u00a0 \u2013 well, I think IndyCar officials look at this and say there was an accident up front, everybody checked up, and Newgarden couldn't avoid the accident.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I don't think Herta sees it the same way. Newgarden was accelerating at the exit pretty aggressively and at the last second dumped the throttle. I think that's what Colton is upset about."<\/p>\n

Asked about the incident, Newgarden said he hadn't taken time to watch the replay to have a full understanding of the clash.<\/p>\n

"I remember just everyone checking up on the exit of the corner," said Newgarden.<\/p>\n

"I sort of centre-punched Colton. I hate that most likely affected his race. I'm sure he went spinning because of it.<\/p>\n

"I don't know why everyone checked up on the exit. I didn't see that. I saw people going on the outside. <\/p>\n

"I'm sure something was going on in front of him. It must have been. That's the only thing I can remember without seeing the actual replay.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

Herta has been a consistent threat this year but has little to show for it beyond two podiums at St Petersburg and Long Beach.<\/p>\n

The 24-year-old has had a wretched run of late. At the Indianapolis 500, he qualified 13th and crashed out on lap 86.<\/p>\n

Despite only suffering minor cosmetic damage, Herta got out of his car and ended his hopes.<\/p>\n

On the streets of Detroit, he finished 19th after he slid off the track trying to make a pass in damp conditions.<\/p>\n

Herta sits inside the top 10 and remains firmly in contention for the title but admits it's hard to stomach the lacklustre results with the speed he knows he has.<\/p>\n

"I'd like to get wins instead of saying 'Oh these points might matter' and whatnot," Herta said.<\/p>\n

"The last three weeks have just been terrible for me. I hope to turn it around. I hope to have some sort of luck.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"This car has been fast, this crew has been good on the stops, on the strategy, every single place we've gone so far.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"To not have a win and only have a handful of podiums is disappointing in my book."<\/p>\n
