The Melbourne Rebels' 14 year Super Rugby run<\/a> is over after a 47-20 quarter-final loss to the Hurricanes<\/a> in Wellington on Saturday.\ufeff<\/p>\n

The result was anticipated but the Rebels at least went down swinging in their first finals game against the minor premiers.<\/p>\n

The mistake-riddled Hurricanes only led 7-6 on the brink of halftime but winger Josh Moorby's converted try on the siren made it 14-6 \ufeffand took some wind out of the Rebels' sails.<\/p>\n

Weight of possession took its toll in the second half and after plenty of brave defending, the Rebels began to drop off tackles against a Hurricanes side now playing with more urgency.<\/p>\n

Tries to dynamic forwards Brayden Iose, Asafo Aumua, Devan Flanders and Du'Plessis Kirifi put the result beyond doubt but Lachie Anderson's quickfire double gave Rebels fans some much-needed cheer in their last hurrah.<\/p>\n

Rival winger Kini Naholo then scored a late try as the Hurricanes joined the Chiefs in the semi-finals with two more quarter-finals to be played on Saturday.<\/p>\n

They are sweating on a calf injury to star prop Xavier Numia while fullback Ruben Love was a late withdrawal before the match.<\/p>\n

Rebels \ufeffplayers will now cross their fingers to see if they are added to Joe Schmidt's Wallabies training squad.<\/p>\n

Lock Josh Canham continued his breakout season and made a real nuisance of himself at lineout time.<\/p>\n

"We had high hopes to go further but when you give a quality opposition like the Hurricanes opportunities like that, it's hard to come back. We were really proud of that first half but you've got to do it for 80 minutes.<\/p>\n
