Former Wallabies<\/a> and Kangaroos<\/a> dual international Mat Rogers has thrown his support behind calls for the NRL<\/a> to adopt rugby's 20-minute red card rule.<\/p>\n

Rogers said Wednesday night's State of Origin<\/a> series-opener was "ruined" by Joseph Suaalii's send-off in the opening minutes<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 20 minute red card rule was initially implemented by New Zealand Rugby in 2020<\/a> and broadened by SANZAAR in 2022 after too many games were being ruined by lopsided affairs.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Stan Sport's The Night Before Gameday<\/em>, Rogers said Ashley Klein's decision to send Suaalii for an early shower was the right one.<\/p>\n

"He left the referee with no real choice \u2013 it was heavy contact to the head and knocked Reece Walsh out cold," he said.<\/p>\n

"The onus is on the tackler to put himself in a good position \u2013 (he) didn't do that. He was just too upright.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"(The 20-minute red car) is something that rugby league needs to look at because the jewel in their crown was ruined."<\/p>\n

Fellow panellist Justin Harrison, himself a former Wallaby, said had the rule have been in place on Wednesday night, Suaalii would have been sin-binned, and then upgraded to a send-off by the Bunker.<\/p>\n

"There would have been multiple replays in the Bunker system to adjudicate whether it's upgraded to a red card," Harrison said.<\/p>\n

"Therefore, Joseph Suaalii doesn't come back on but you can replace him after 20 minutes.<\/p>\n

"If that's a Test match, that's probably what happens. Now, you still sanction the player, you still have integrity of result because Queensland still get rewarded with 20 minutes of one (player) over."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
