Australia's swim team<\/a> is poised \ufeffto top the medal table over Team USA for the first time since the 1956 Olympics, according to American Olympic<\/a> champion Rowdy Gaines.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Nine's new documentary Boiling Point – Swimming's Greatest Rivalry<\/em>, which airs on Sunday night, Gaines, a three-time gold medallist and Hall of Famer, believes the Aussies pose a genuine threat to the American team in Paris.<\/p>\n

"<\/em>Right now, Australia is going to win the most gold medals," says Gaines, who famously edged out Australia's Mark Stockwell for gold in the men's 100m freestyle at the 1984 Olympics.<\/p>\n

"In the history of swimming, the biggest rivalry of all is Australia and the United States.<\/p>\n

"With Australia, we hate them before, but we love them after. It's this brotherly love \u2026 because you want to beat your brother but then you're going to give them a big hug afterwards."<\/p>\n

Australia topped the medal tally \ufeffat last year's world swimming championships in Japan, taking home 13 gold medals, seven silver and five bronze.<\/p>\n

The Aussies won nine gold medals in the pool at the last Olympics in Tokyo – their most ever.<\/p>\n

Former Olympian Giaan Rooney said the Aussies are "genuine contenders".\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Americans aren't one to deflect and take the pressure off them. They will only make a statement like that if it's actually a chance of happening," she said in the documentary. "For Rowdy to say that based off world championship results last year [says a lot].<\/p>\n

"I've never been one to jinx the team or put too much pressure or expectation on them, but I believe this team is such an experienced swim team they can handle that pressure and expectation. They're fine with it.<\/p>\n

"I honestly believe all the stars are aligning at these Olympics to produce one of our most successful swim teams ever.<\/p>\n

"The Americans were absolutely floored by our Aussie performances [in Japan]. For NBC to change the medal tally [at last year's world championships] … to show the total number of medals instead of gold medals [as the top nation], it speaks volumes. In some ways, it has ignited that USA-Australia rivalry like never before."<\/p>\n
