A\ufeffn emotional Jess Sergis<\/a> was lost for words after NSW<\/a> fell short of securing the State of Origin series on Thursday night, forcing a decider against Queensland<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Heading into a packed house in Newcastle and already up 1-0 in the series, the Sky Blues were in control for the majority of the contest in rain-affected conditions.<\/p>\n

However, a brilliant solo try from Tarryn Aiken leveled the scores, before a clutch field goal from Lauren Brown sealed the 11-10 result for the Maroons.<\/a><\/p>\n

Despite suffering a leg injury before half-time, Sergis performed admirably and came up with a huge one-on-one strip that led directly to Tiana Penitani's try, which should have seen the Sky Blues stay on top in the final stages of the contest.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Nine post-game, Sergis was almost lost for words as emotions ran high.<\/p>\n

"It was a pretty hard game, to be honest," she said.<\/p>\n

"The conditions, obviously \u2026 I'm sorry, I don't even know what to say.<\/p>\n

"I'm just pretty disappointed at the moment. It was a big grind. We knew they were gonna come out firing and we just did the best we could. It's just unfortunate.<\/p>\n

"We'll just go back and watch video, we need to get a bit tidier in our middles because they went through there a few times. Regardless of the weather, I think we still played pretty good – we shifted the ball and did what we needed to do.<\/p>\n

"But they are smart football players and to lose by one hurts."<\/p>\n

The strike centre was one of the standouts for NSW, with backrower Kezie Apps and five-eighth Corban Baxter also starring in defeat.<\/p>\n

Sergis wasn't the only emotional player after the full-time siren, with player of the match Shannon Mato tearing up when speaking about her family.<\/p>\n

"It feels amazing, I'm super stoked and proud of the girls," the front-rower said.<\/p>\n

"I was actually confident coming in and I'm just really happy, this is amazing. I can't wait to share this with my family. I'm really emotional right now \u2026 I'm just proud."<\/p>\n

Mato finished with a team-high 142 run metres, including a barnstorming carr\ufeffy that put her side in position to nail the match-winning field goal.<\/p>\n
