Novak Djokovic's<\/a> legendary powers of pushing through physical and mental adversity will be put to the test \ufeffagain after he opted for surgery on his injured right knee.<\/p>\n

French newspaper L'Equipe<\/em> reported that Djokovic would have an operation to repair the medial meniscus tear<\/a> on Thursday (AEST).<\/p>\n

He is now in a race against time to be fit for Wimbledon, which \ufeffbegins on July 1, and the Olympic Games<\/a> tournament, which gets underway on July 27.<\/p>\n

The 37-year-old qualified for the French Open quarter-finals but withdrew after revealing he had been dealing with a problem with his knee for a couple of weeks.<\/p>\n

Djokovic said it was manageable until he aggravated it early in the second set of a five set, fourth round win over Francisco Cerundolo.<\/p>\n

The Serb has won seven Wimbledon titles and Casey Dellacqua said he was capable of going deep again, even without match practice.<\/p>\n

"Because he's won there so many times before. And if you're practising on grass – obviously you want to be playing tournaments, you want to be playing competitively," Dellacqua said on Stan Sport's Grand Slam Daily<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"But I think for someone like Novak, if he can get back on the grass and set up some practice matches (he can win). But I think the main thing that Novak's worrying about, is the fact that he needs to get this injury right. And I would suspect he's very, very keen for the Olympic Games, for that gold medal opportunity. Wish him the best with recovery and we'll wait to see if we see him at Wimbledon."<\/p>\n

World No.1 Djokovic will be officially replaced atop the rankings by Jannik Sinner next week.<\/p>\n

It would be a mistake to write off Djokovic.<\/p>\n

Carlos Alcaraz, the 21-year-old with two majors who is primed, along with Sinner, to take over at the top of the sport, noted Djokovic's past history of returning from injuries.<\/p>\n

"He comes back stronger and he comes back quickly," Alcaraz said.<\/p>\n

This is what Djokovic said on the day he won that drought ending, run starting title at Wimbledon six years ago.<\/p>\n

"There were several moments where I was frustrated and questioning whether I can get back to the desired level or not. But that makes this whole journey even more special for me."<\/p>\n
