But the night also ended with league having an opportunity to learn from rugby<\/a> in avoiding an inevitable and dull mismatch.<\/p>\n

If \ufeffSuaalii had committed his dumb tackle in a NSW vs Queensland rugby match, new rules meant the Waratahs would have been back to a full complement of players after 20 minutes.<\/p>\n

Suaalii would still have to watch on from the sidelines – and cop a long ban – but a teammate would take his place for the rest of the game after that time.<\/p>\n

The 20 minute red card rule was initially implemented by New Zealand Rugby in 2020<\/a> and broadened by SANZAAR in 2022 after too many games were being ruined by lopsided affairs.<\/p>\n

It has been effective and, despite some opposition from France and Scotland in particular, World Rugby will trial the common sense law tweak across the globe this year.<\/p>\n

"Leading to more jeopardy and a better contest on the day," a World Rugby statement said.<\/p>\n

"The punishment is focused on the offending player, not the game."<\/p>\n

It's a no brainer, as is the new rugby initiative for referees to issue yellow cards for foul play in the first instance, and then allow the TMO 10 minutes to review and determine whether the act is worthy of an upgrade to red.<\/p>\n

Leading rugby coaches Steve Hansen, Eddie Jones and Dave Rennie were instrumental in pushing the 20 minute red card through against opposition from the northern hemisphere.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"There's people who think there's no consequences if it's only a 20 minute red card," former Wallabies coach Rennie said.<\/p>\n

"But the consequences for the individual is that a suspension starts at six weeks. They get sent off and then they don't get to come back on. The team is hurt by that.<\/p>\n

"The 20 minute red card allows for referee error and also means that a team has been punished for 20 minutes. It's a long time without a player, but we get a game of 15 on 15.<\/p>\n

"Individuals who get it wrong are going to get punished and spend a long time on the sideline anyway. If we can get back to 15 on 15, ideally, that's what we want."<\/p>\n

The Maroons may well have won on Wednesday anyway but a deflating 38-10 blowout would have been avoided.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Even injured Queensland star Cameron Munster felt dudded by the flat experience.<\/p>\n

"I felt like even though the Blues still had 12, they should be able to activate the 18th man," Munster said on Nine's post-game coverage.<\/p>\n

"I know ideally they shouldn't have been able to do that, but I think it was an unfortunate incident with Suaalii.<\/p>\n

"I feel like they should still have 12 men on the field, but I feel like their utility or the 18th man should be activated and they can still use him. I don't know."<\/p>\n

Gutted Blues coach Michael Maguire agreed "\ufeffthose sorts of things are definitely worth looking at."<\/p>\n

Peter V'landys took several swings at rugby after Suaalii's bombshell code switch.<\/p>\n
