Blues<\/a> coach Michael Maguire<\/a> overlooked Latrell Mitchell<\/a> in his maiden squad for Wednesday night's State of Origin series opener in Sydney<\/a>.<\/p>\n

And as the Blues were staring down the barrel of a catastrophic defeat<\/a>, he posted a cryptic selfie to his Instagram stories.<\/p>\n

Mitchell made himself available for selection, but was overlooked in the centres in favour of Stephen Crichton<\/a> and Joseph Suaalii<\/a>.<\/p>\n

While Crichton was rock solid in difficult circumstances, Suaalii's debut was a disaster \u2013 sent off in the eighth minute for a nasty hit on Reece Walsh<\/a>, which earned him a likely four-game ban.<\/p>\n

Mitchell posted a selfie to his Instagram story sitting on his couch looking pensive, presumably while watching his TV. It was posted around full time.<\/p>\n

News Corp reported last week conversations between Mitchell and Maguire had gone south in the lead up to selection, which Mitchell denied<\/a>.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I'm always committed to playing for NSW," he said.<\/p>\n

"I specifically said to Madge via phone call if I'm playing well enough for me to be in your side, then I'm 100 per cent in."<\/p>\n

Mitchell has not played for the Blues since 2021.<\/p>\n

Several NSW legends, \ufeffincluding Andrew Johns, said before the teams were selected that Mitchell should be included.<\/p>\n

"I think NSW needs some serious x-factor … I think Latrell is a must," Johns said on Nine's The Sunday Footy Show<\/em> before the teams were announced.<\/p>\n

"(Against Parramatta) he looked in a really good headspace and he's a freak \u2013 he can do things which no one else can."<\/p>\n

Mitchell has two rounds \u2013 against the Titans and Broncos \u2013 to impress. Squads for Origin II will be picked after the NRL's round 15, and will be named either on Sunday June 16 or Monday June 17 ahead of the June 26 clash in Melbourne.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
