Murray Rose\ufeff made his Olympic<\/a> debut in 1956 and emerged from the Games as an Australian swimming<\/a> legend.<\/p>\n

He was only 17, but he hauled in three gold medals.\ufeff<\/p>\n

A strapping, relentless athlete with a chiselled jaw, blonde hair and\ufeff an easy smile, Rose was a member of the victorious 4x200m freestyle relay team in Melbourne, and conquered the 400m freestyle and 1500m freestyle.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Two Australians, both teenagers, clinched three gold medals at the 1956 Olympics: Rose and sprinting phenom Betty Cuthbert, who earned the nickname "Golden Girl".<\/p>\n

Rose teamed up with Kevin O'Halloran, John Devitt and John Hendricks to win relay gold, storming to glory in a world record time of 8:23.6.<\/p>\n

Rose also won the 400m in an Olympic record time of 4:27.3 and the 1500m in 17:58.9.<\/p>\n

The England-born swimmer became the youngest Olympian to win three gold medals at one Games.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Rose, nicknamed "Seaweed Streak" because of his vegetarianism, successfully defended his 400m crown at the Rome 1960 Olympics\ufeff, and won silver in the 1500m and bronze in the 4x200m in the Italian capital.<\/p>\n

When he died in 2012 at the age of 73, he was described by John Coates, the Australian Olympic Committee's president at the time, as "simply peerless" and "the finest swimmer throughout his era".\ufeff<\/p>\n

Rose was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1985 and earned "legend" status in 1999.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
