Novak Djokovic's<\/a> eight-year reign atop men's tennis could be about to end indefinitely.<\/p>\n

After Roland-Garros<\/a> concludes on Monday, Italy's Jannik Sinner<\/a> will rise to the top of the ATP rankings.<\/p>\n

Djokovic withdrew from the French classic on Wednesday with a knee injury and in doing so gifted Casper Ruud<\/a> a semi-final berth.<\/p>\n

The Serbian will at least drop to second and could fall to third if Carlos Alcaraz wins the clay court grand slam.<\/p>\n

Indeed, staying in the top 10 could be a difficult task for Djokovic with 5000 points to defend across Wimbledon, the Cincinnati Open, and the US Open.<\/p>\n

If Sinner loses his next match, Djokovic would be 1200 points behind.<\/p>\n

Djokovic has to defend 1200 points at Wimbledon, which he might not be fit to play, and 2000 at the US Open, which mean's he's more likely than not to go backwards.<\/p>\n

If he is not fit for Wimbledon, he loses all 1200 points.<\/p>\n

The 24-time grand slam winner's luckless year has him pegged 10th on year-to-date rankings.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Stan Sport's Grand Slam Daily<\/em>, 2011 Roland-Garros mixed doubles winner Casey Dellacqua said she doesn't expect Djokovic will ever be No.1 again.<\/p>\n

"His time at No.1 is dwindling, but in saying that, he's got that record," she said.<\/p>\n

"Let's be real, I'm not discounting the fact that he could absolutely get back to world No.1, he's just had 428 weeks at world No.1, that is so many weeks. He has that record as well.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I don't think that's necessarily something that he's wanting. He's wanting titles. He's been very open even in his Roland-Garros presser just around the fact that he is after records, titles \u2013 not even ATP titles \u2013 but he is after those big records.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"The No.1, he's got that record for being there for that many weeks. I don't know if that's too big a concern for him. He absolutely could get back there, do I think he will? Probably not."<\/p>\n

Dellacqua said she was "feeling a bit sad" for Djokovic after he suffered a medial meniscus tear. The recovery time for the injury is roughly six to eight weeks.<\/p>\n

"I think it just raises a lot of questions, probably questions mostly for him I'm sure as well," said Dellacqua.<\/p>\n

"Probably overwhelmingly a little sad as well because he's also just beaten (Lorenzo) Musetti and then he beat (Francisco) Cerundolo \u2013 two epic clay-courters \u2013 and we thought, 'Wow! If he can get through those matches, how far can he go?'"<\/p>\n

Of the four grand slams, Roland-Garros is Djokovic's weakest.<\/p>\n

He's won it just three times. He's won the US Open four times with his most recent coming in 2023. Djokovic is a seven-time Wimbledon winner and 10-time Australian Open winner.<\/p>\n

Dellacqua said the 37-year-old's relative lack of success at Roland-Garros would have played a part, as well as the upcoming Olympics in France.<\/p>\n

"Definitely what he has gone and got is a scan, he's looked at the results, sat down with his team and said 'Look, is it really a big risk taking and going on to play these potentially another few matches when I've already had so much time on court? Maybe I should withdraw here', which he's done and look towards Wimbledon and the Olympics," she explained.<\/p>\n

"My take is that the Olympics is very, very important for Novak Djokovic this year. He's shown some good form on the clay. Knowing that they're going back to Paris and Roland-Garros to play there, and Wimbledon just around the corner where he's had so much success. He's taken a preventative, cautionary schedule to withdraw."<\/p>\n

This year will mark the first time the Roland-Garros final has been played without Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, or Roger Federer in 20 years.<\/p>\n
