Former Wallabies Tim Horan and Cameron Shepherd are baffled by Joe Schmidt's call to omit Mark Nawaqanitawase from his first Wallabies training squad.<\/a><\/p>\n

\ufeffSchmidt has picked eight players from both the Force and Waratahs after those clubs missed out on the Super Rugby Pacific finals, which kick off in New Zealand on Friday night.<\/a><\/p>\n

But Roosters-bound Nawaqanitawase was not among them – and neither were his NSW teammates Izaia Perese, Lachie Swinton and Ned Hanigan who have all signed deals overseas next season.<\/p>\n

Nawaqanitawase was one of Australia's best during a dismal Rugby World Cup campaign last season but was unable to stand out among a similarly poor Waratahs team this year.<\/p>\n

"If I'm picking a side now, a Wallabies team to play Wales in a few weeks time, he's one winger," Test great Horan said on Stan Sport's Rugby Heaven<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"Marika's (Koroibete) the other winger and some players are made for Super Rugby. He's (Nawaqanitawase) made for Test match footy, and I think just the way he plays, his height, the cross field kick that comes into the game at Test match level – not so much in Super Rugby."<\/p>\n

A full Wallabies squad will assemble in Brisbane in late June to \ufeffprepare for the opening Test against Wales in Sydney on July 6.<\/p>\n

It is expected that Schmidt \ufeffwill select solely from Super Rugby players for the July series but will consider overseas stars such as Koroibete for the August-September Rugby Championship.<\/p>\n

"Joe Schmidt's going 'OK, we've got some very good wingers.' So if Mark's not going to be here next year, do we start developing those wingers so that when we come around to the (British and Irish) Lions (tour of Australia) next year, we've got those players through?<\/p>\n

"But it's important. The fans want wins now. They're not patient. He is a Test match player," Horan said.<\/p>\n

Shepherd agreed and believed a change of scenery with the Wallabies camp could immediately bear fruit.<\/p>\n

"He is so talented. Let's not forget that 12 months ago he was probably one of the first picked in the Wallabies," Shepherd said.<\/p>\n

"Six tries in 11 appearances, great finisher. I really hope that a decision hasn't been made – not only him, but others – to leave them out of that train on squad, purely because they may be heading elsewhere next year. It's a train on squad.<\/p>\n

Force fullback Kurtley Beale did make \ufeffthe initial cut.<\/p>\n

Horan and Shepherd both supported that move but didn't expect the veteran to feature in Schmidt's full strength 23.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"We all hear about how he's a great communicator on the field and how he lifted the Western Force – just get a feel for him in a squad situation," Horan said.<\/p>\n

"I can't see him sitting on the bench for a Test match or playing, but if you're around the squad and you get a couple of injuries, yes, you can call on him."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
