Sydney Swans<\/a> coach John Longmire<\/a>\ufeff has called for the AFL<\/a> to consider imposing limitations on long contracts as the competition's trend of signing players to confounding lengthy deals continues.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Most recently, GWS<\/a> defender Sam Taylor inked a seven-year extension that will see him remain at the Giants until the end of 2032 on Tuesday, while the Brisbane Lions<\/a> secured Hugh McCluggage until 2031.<\/p>\n

The competition's governing body reportedly cracked down on "high-risk player contracts" last season with any contract lodged of six years or more requiring to come with written club president or CEO approvals.<\/p>\n

The initiative came as the competition recorded multiple accounts of players failing to fulfil their lengthy deals due to injury or the inability to maintain AFL-level form.<\/p>\n

Demons<\/a> star Angus Brayshaw is the latest player who has had a long-term deal shortened after being forced into medical retirement as a result of ongoing concussion issues.<\/p>\n

"Concussion is a massive issue facing our game," Brayshaw said in his retirement statement.<\/p>\n

"I hope from this, a terrible result for me personally, can come some positive outcomes for the future of player safety."<\/p>\n

\ufeffWith welfare initiatives at the forefront of the competition's concerns, Longmire said he fears the competition will discover a growing trend in unfulfilled long-term deals.<\/p>\n

"You've got\ufeff to be a massive supporter of all the welfare initiatives that [the AFL] is putting in place with our places, with regards to concussion," Longmire said on Nine's Footy Classified<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"When I think of the evolution of the playing list and list management, we've seen with the introduction of free agency that now the old three-year contract is [seen] as pretty short term.<\/p>\n

"You're now \ufefftalking about six, seven, eight-year contracts. And that's on the back of quite often the introduction [deals] of free agencies.<\/p>\n

"It's probably something for the AFL to \ufeffconsider, [whether] there should be a limit on player contracts. The reality is that it's very difficult to get the clubs to do that.<\/p>\n

"There is always someone else willing to offer more years."<\/p>\n

The birth of the monster long-term deal ironically started with the Swans, who offered a landmark nine-year contract to sign established superstar Lance 'Buddy' Franklin from Hawthorn.<\/p>\n

Franklin shocked the AFL world in 2013 when he signed the gigantic contract, worth over $10 million at the Swans, providing the club – and Franklin – with a sense of security and longevity in the competition.<\/p>\n

"We are obviously at the forefront of [lengthy deals] with Lance Franklin," he continued.<\/p>\n

"It's probably something \ufefffor the AFL to consider in a wider scope of the game, how long is a long-term contract?<\/p>\n

"At the moment we are seeing \ufeffthe really long-term contracts and with things like concussion and what that means to the game, it's something for the game's [governing body] to consider."<\/p>\n

Nine's Kane Cornes<\/a>, who is a vocal opponent of lengthy contract extensions, has also called for a crackdown, suggesting clubs should take full responsibility for deals that go wrong.<\/p>\n

"If a deal is six years or longer, you have to get a specific sign-off from the AFL and it needs to be proven that the club president and the CEO have agreed to this long-term deal for the player," Cornes said in response to the reports of the AFL's crackdown.<\/p>\n

"It's not saying you can't do them and they're not putting a limit on how many years or anything like that and they're not being restrictive.<\/p>\n

"It's just an extra hoop that some clubs have to jump through.<\/p>\n

"They're putting the responsibility back on the club saying, 'You've signed off on it, both of your figureheads – the CEO and the president said this is a deal that you wanted to do'.<\/p>\n

"There can't be any remorse. The responsibilities are purely on the club, and you can't get out of it."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
