Michael Hooper<\/a> says a new mattress has revived his hopes of Olympic selection – and the Wallabies legend is only half joking.<\/p>\n

Hooper is now running \ufefffreely and plans to return to full training with the Australian sevens team next week.<\/p>\n

But in his Between Two Posts<\/em> debut on Stan Sport, Hooper revealed the extent of his battle with osteitis pubis<\/a> that ruled him out of the world series final leg in Madrid.<\/a><\/p>\n

"I'm having agony, like waking up at two, three (am) in the morning. Groin region – it's like someone's hit you in the nuts," Hooper said.<\/p>\n

"And so then I'd have to lie on my back because I couldn't lie on my side because that hurts. So then my back started getting problems."<\/p>\n

Tossing and turning, Hooper said he spoke to a physio who said \ufeffa new mattress "won't change it."<\/p>\n

But the 32-year-old, 125 Test veteran \ufefftrusted his gut.<\/p>\n

"I put up with two weeks of this thing. So I had enough one morning, about 3am I just bought a new bed that would be shipped in that day.<\/p>\n

"And that seems to have solved the problem… it's seemingly worked. Now, it's also coincided with not training for 10 days. So, chicken and egg stuff here."<\/p>\n

Hooper hopes to be fit to play trial games against Fiji this month before coach John Manenti names his Olympic squad in early July.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"If you see Michael Hooper trying to check a mattress into oversized baggage, you know he's in the Olympics, that's it," Morgan Turinui quipped.<\/p>\n

Australia's men finished seventh in Madrid while the women won the tournament in "poetic" fashion.<\/p>\n

"We got beaten convincingly there on the first night of competition, but defensively, over the course of the weekend, really stepped up from that first game.<\/p>\n

"So there's some really nice things to like, being in the hunt of pretty much every game there across the weekend.<\/p>\n

\"Dupont<\/p>\n

"Unfortunately only getting the two wins, against Great Britain both times. But they're a tricky team.<\/p>\n

"We'd lost to them in the previous few tournaments. They run you down, they grind you out, they recycle a lot of ball.<\/p>\n

"So that's pleasing to get one over them. But yeah, not where we'd want to be, come two months time."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
