Australian \ufeffgolfing<\/a> great Adam Scott<\/a>'s incredible streak at majors is in danger of ending following a nail-biting qualification playoff against a countryman.<\/p>\n

Scott is on the brink of missing next week's US Open<\/a>, which would be the first major tournament he's not played in since before the 2001 US Open.<\/p>\n

He holds the record longest streak of golf majors contested, currently sitting at 91 straight. His active streak is more than double that of the next current player, Jordan Spieth (44).<\/p>\n

But his chances of playing a 92nd took a hit when he failed to nab one of the four spots up for grabs at the qualifying tournament in Ohio on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\ufeffA field of 64 players teed it up in Springfield and the top four earned spots in the US Open.<\/p>\n

Zac Blair finished first over the 36-hole qualifying round – colloquially dubbed the longest day in golf – while Beau Hossler and Carson Schaake tied for second to also earn a spot in next week's major.<\/p>\n

But Scott and fellow Aussie hopeful Cam Davis finished tied for fourth, forcing an awkward playoff between the pair for the remaining selection.<\/p>\n

\ufeffDavis gave his fellow Australian a chance by making bogey on the final hole in the Ohio qualifier, sending them to a playoff for the fourth and final spot.<\/p>\n

Scott chipped in for birdie and Davis matched him with an 18-foot birdie putt. Both made par on the next hole, and then Davis hit his approach to two feet and Scott couldn't match the birdie on the third playoff hole.<\/p>\n

Davis – world No.66 – earned his spot in the US Open field but Scott must now rely on the USGA selecting him as an exemption pick.<\/p>\n

\ufeffScott's world ranking of 60 is right on the cut line for automatic qualification, but he is expected to slip due to sitting out this week's Memorial Tournament.<\/p>\n

Given his standing in the game – being a PGA Tour policy board member \ufeffand the 2013 Masters winner – it's likely the USGA will give the 43-year-old an exemption to play his 92nd straight major.<\/p>\n

When told about potentially ending Scott's streak, Davis only replied, "damn… that shows how good a player he is".\ufeff<\/p>\n

For Davis, \ufeffthe 29-year-old was exhausted after taking 39 holes to earn his selection.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffMy legs are really sore right now, that was a really long day," Davis told CBS after the playoff.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffEverything gets a little tougher once you hit the 36-hole mark, for sure. But I played some really good golf today."<\/p>\n

Davis finished tied for 12th at this year's Masters but is hopeful\ufeff of finishing higher up the leaderboard next week.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffIt's nice to see the game trending in a good direction again," he said.<\/p>\n

"This golf\ufeff was good – I was spraying it a little bit (but) you can get away with it here. When you get to the US Open you need to tighten it up a little bit."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
