In a stunning move, Aprilia has annexed MotoGP<\/a> leader Jorge Martin from Ducati for the 2025 season.<\/p>\n

As the top Ducati rider via the Pramac Racing team, Martin's name was heavily associated with a move to the factory outfit to join Francesco Bagnaia.<\/p>\n

The shift has sent shockwaves through the MotoGP paddock. Ducati has manufactured the fastest bikes in recent years with KTM its closest rival.<\/p>\n

Ducati riders occupy first through fourth in the riders' championship after seven events with Pedro Acosta in fifth as the leading KTM rider.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Maverick Vinales is the top Aprilia rider in sixth, with Aleix Espargaro the next best rider in eighth.<\/p>\n

Martin's success at Pramac had him among the favourites to join the Red Devils next year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

However, it would appear a move to Aprilia and likely being billed as its top rider alongside Vinales was a much more attractive prospect.<\/p>\n

Aprilia confirmed Martin on a multi-year contract on Monday.<\/p>\n

The move was swift, with the Spaniard's signing coming just after the Italian Grand Prix in Mugello and made less than an hour after putting pen to paper.<\/p>\n

In the wake of the announcement, it was suggested Martin's decision to sign so swiftly may have been prompted after reports broke that Marc Marquez was set to sign with the factory Ducati team.<\/p>\n

"The strategy was quite clear not to do the first move because we didn't want to do any gifts to anyone," said Aprilia team principal Massimo Rivola.<\/p>\n

"But when we felt that there was a good opportunity \u2013 and it was actually last night \u2013 we were quite quick in making action rather than talk. We found a deal very, very quickly.<\/p>\n

"Announcing at this point, being first to announce, is to show that we can do things quickly and we can decide quickly. It was just 'Let's fix it, it's done and let's focus on the next step'."<\/p>\n

When Martin came knocking, Rivola revealed it took very little to convince Aprilia's higher-ups to stump up the cash needed to sign the points leader.<\/p>\n

"Last night I called my boss and I said 'We have a chance' and he said 'Get it, go for it' \u2013 and I did," said Rivola.<\/p>\n

Martin's move is the latest domino to fall in the MotoGP silly season.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It's all but accepted that Enea Bastianini will be demoted from the factory Ducati team and will be replaced by incumbent Gresini Racing rider Marquez.<\/p>\n
