W\ufeffith news that West Coast Eagles<\/a> young gun Harley Reid<\/a> is officially out of the Rising Star race due to a suspension that deems him ineligible, it raises questions around what the award really proves.<\/p>\n

Reid was handed a two-week suspension<\/a> for his dangerous sling tackle of St Kilda's Darcy Wilson.<\/p>\n

A frustrated Reid slung Wilson into the Optus Stadium turf during West Coast's 14-point loss to the Saints<\/a> on Saturday afternoon.<\/p>\n

The Eagles will still challenge Reid's suspension at the tribunal<\/a> on Tuesday night, but he'll still be unable to win the 2024 Rising Star award, which was almost guaranteed to be his at season's end.<\/p>\n

It also comes as another young gun, Western Bulldogs forward Sam Darcy, was also rubbed out of Rising Star contention\ufeff, after he was handed a two-week suspension for his late bump on Collingwood's Brayden Maynard on Friday night<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Despite the two leading contenders for the Rising Star award now ineligible, their acts won't serve as the be-all and end-all of their budding careers.<\/p>\n

Geelong and Gold Coast legend Gary Ablett Jr, a dual Brownlow medallist and two-time premiership player, never won the Rising Star.<\/p>\n

Neither did superstar Western Bulldogs skipper Marcus Bontempelli.<\/p>\n

One of the greatest midfielders of the modern era, Richmond's Dustin Martin never won one, despite later claiming three Norm Smith medals, three premierships and a Brownlow.<\/p>\n

\"Darcy<\/p>\n

And former West Coast and Carlton champion Chris Judd, who is also a dual Brownlow medallist, was never crowned the Rising Star, either.\ufeff<\/p>\n

It's a neat reminder that Reid and Darcy will very likely continue on and have successful careers, that don't include winning the Rising Star.<\/p>\n

However, there are still calls to update the criteria of the award, to ensure the best young players of the game cannot be rubbed out due to football acts they may get punished for.\ufeff<\/p>\n

It comes as journalist Craig Hutchison suggested changes to be made to the Rising Star award's requirements.<\/p>\n

Put simply, he is keen to see an updated definition of the "fairest" element in the award.<\/p>\n

"It's going to take the best kids out (of contention). They're more inclined to make a mistake because they're young."<\/p>\n

Hutchison \ufeffalso wants to see the award be allowed to be given to only first year players.<\/p>\n

At the moment, any player aged 21 or younger can win the award, not just players in their debut season.<\/p>\n

It means Geelong forward Ollie Dempsey, who is in his third season at 21-years-old and has been nominated already for the Rising Star in season 2024, could very likely win the whole thing due to the suspensions of Reid and Darcy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
