Should the AFL<\/a> consider changing the 50-metre penalty to 25 metres?<\/p>\n

Jimmy Bartel<\/a> and Eddie McGuire<\/a> think so.<\/p>\n

\ufeffAnd Bartel's opinion spawns from an act he saw at a junior football game that left him gobsmacked.<\/p>\n

It comes as more players are being penalised for entering the player with the ball's protected space, usually without even realising it.<\/p>\n

A 50m penalty for simply stepping inside the zone without even knowing it, could even cost a team a goal.<\/p>\n

Now, Bartel believes that if the AFL are continuing to pay \ufeffpenalties more often than not, they should consider a less harsh penalty.<\/p>\n

\"AFL<\/p>\n

"Do you know what I saw on the weekend, in an under 9s football game? I saw an umpire pay a protected (area) penalty," Bartel said on Nine's Eddie and Jimmy<\/em> podcast.<\/p>\n

"This is not a word of a lie, I was standing there and I went 'he's not, is he?'. Then I just had to put my hand up. 'He's paying a protected zone free' and (he did)."<\/p>\n

Bartel now wants to see the rule changed, to avoid minuscule acts deciding games.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Is there a discussion of a 25m penalty?" he asked.<\/p>\n

"Because it still takes you out of the zone and is still a penalty."<\/p>\n

Eddie McGuire echoed Bartel's sentiment.<\/p>\n

"I agree," he added.\ufeff<\/p>\n

\"Umpires<\/p>\n

McGuire also explained that during his time on the AFL's rules committee, a discussion to change the 50m penalty back to a 25m penalty had already been had, years ago.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"That was actually brought up at rules committee, when I was one that. What happened to that?\ufeff" he said.<\/p>\n

The AFL has already changed the way the game is officiated, with less time now given to players in possession of the ball to dispose of it.<\/p>\n
