Collingwood<\/a> premiership player Oleg Markov is the latest footballer to miss a game in 2024 to attend a wedding.<\/p>\n

In a sign clubs are far more flexible and understanding than they ever have been, the Magpies allowed Markov to be a groomsman for his brother in law's wedding.<\/p>\n

The arrangement was struck before Christmas, and it was agreed the 28-year-old would fly to the Gold Coast for the weekend, instead of to Perth to face Fremantle.<\/p>\n

After discussions in the summer, Collingwood formed the view it was best to look after its people and make allowances where possible.<\/p>\n

The Pies have not shied away from supporting their players and allowing them to find the right balance under CEO Craig Kelly and coach Craig McRae.<\/p>\n

In April, Geelong's Oisin Mullin was granted leave to attend his sister's wedding in Italy.<\/p>\n

One player from a Victorian-based club, who asked to remain anonymous, successfully negotiated leave for a wedding last year, against the wrath of his senior coach.<\/p>\n

Several years ago, another player from a non-Victorian club was denied leave to attend his sister-in-law's wedding, despite having been ruled out due to injury.<\/p>\n
