Jimmy Bartel<\/a> says that Melbourne<\/a> must stop relying on star ruckman Max Gawn<\/a>, after they copped their worst loss since 2015.<\/p>\n

The Demons went down to Fremantle by 92 points<\/a> in Alice Springs on Sunday, the worst loss in coach Simon Goodwin's career.<\/p>\n

It's also their third loss in four games.<\/p>\n

The Demons lost clearances 48 to 23, as young Dockers midfielder Caleb Serong collected 27 disposals and an impressive eight clearances.<\/p>\n

Now, the Demons have been left scratching their heads wondering where it all went so wrong.\ufeff<\/p>\n

\ufeffBut Jimmy Bartel thinks he has the answer, and it comes in the form of six-time All-Australian ruckman Max Gawn.<\/p>\n

"At the moment, there is an over reliance on Max Gawn dictating the result," Bartel said on Nine's Footy Furnace<\/em> on Sunday night.<\/p>\n

"No other Melbourne player has a bigger drop off between wins and losses (than Gawn).\ufeff Max's three lowest rated games this year are against Sydney, Carlton, Freo – all losses.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"It's almost a compliment to Max, how important he is to this Melbourne side.\ufeff<\/p>\n

\"Sean<\/p>\n

"(They're) just asking questions constantly of Max Gawn, trying to wear him down\ufeff."<\/p>\n

Bartel is calling on the rest of the Demons players, many of whom he believes are stars, to step up and support Gawn around the footy.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Other players have to raise their level of play," he said.<\/p>\n

"The big fellow can't win every single game for you."<\/p>\n

\ufeffDespite Bartel urging Demons midfielders, such as star duo Clayton Oliver (19 disposals) and Christian Petracca (26 disposals) to figure out where it went wrong, Leigh Matthews sees the loss as a perfect execution of a Gawn takedown from the Dockers.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffWhen I was watching (Sean) Darcy (Dockers ruckman), the way he was pushing his big frame into Gawn … didn't it remind you of (Sydney's) Brodie Grundy in round one (Opening Round)?," Matthews said.<\/p>\n

"The opposition ruckmen should be learning, you just can't try and outreach Max Gawn, you've got to try and get a big body in and push into him, so at least if he gets hands to the ball, he can't dominate in that area.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

Meantime, Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin\ufeff has vowed a loss as mammoth as their round 12 one will never happen again.<\/p>\n

"When you lose by the margin we lost by, that's unacceptable as a footy club," Goodwin said.<\/p>\n

"That (result) certainly hasn't happened a lot in my time in being here.<\/p>\n

"We have a proud group that will be looking to respond pretty fiercely."<\/p>\n

Melbourne now sit with a 7-5 record.<\/p>\n
