Leigh Matthews<\/a> has urged the AFL to consider change the criteria for the Rising Star award, after two of the top young players of 2024 were suspended days apart, deeming them ineligible to win.<\/p>\n

West Coast Eagles<\/a> young gun Harley Reid<\/a> has been handed a two-week suspension<\/a> for his dangerous sling tackle of St Kilda's Darcy Wilson.<\/p>\n

A frustrated Reid slung Wilson into the Optus Stadium turf during West Coast's 14-point loss to the Saints<\/a> on Saturday afternoon.\ufeff<\/p>\n

The act was deemed as careless conduct, high impact and high contact.<\/p>\n

Meantime, young Western Bulldogs<\/a> forward Sam Darcy was also handed a two-match suspension for his late bump on Collingwood's Brayden Maynard on Friday night<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The act was graded as careless conduct, high impact and high contact.<\/p>\n

The bump occurred early in the first term at Marvel Stadium, with Darcy jumping into Maynard's back as he took a mark just outside Collingwood's forward 50.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Maynard lay in pain before getting up and slotting a goal from the free kick he was awarded.<\/p>\n

The Pies defender passed his SCAT5 concussion test and played out the game, but Darcy's act still rubbed him out of Rising Star contention.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Matthews says both acts were worthy of a suspension, but it doesn't mean the clearly best two young players of the year, who were set to battle it out for the Rising Star award, should now be ineligible.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"What you get suspended for in the modern era, you wouldn't even get free kicks for 20 years ago," he said on Nine's Footy Furnace<\/em> on Sunday night.<\/p>\n

"I will say, I think they were both fairly aggressive acts. Both Sam Darcy and Harley Reid, that was a really aggressive tackle and (he) got two weeks.<\/p>\n

"But I do think, you can get one week (suspension) for just being a little bit careless.<\/p>\n

"Maybe at least you could say 'you've got to get … two weeks or more to be ineligible'."<\/p>\n

Jimmy Bartel echoed Matthews' sentiment, calling for the league to stop ruling out players who are worthy contenders for awards, if their suspension is due to a football act, such as a dangerous tackle.<\/p>\n

"If you get suspended for a football act, you should be eligible still for a Rising Star award," Bartel said.<\/p>\n

Matthews agreed, again raising the point of how football used to be judged back in his playing days.<\/p>\n

"What you're getting reported for in the modern era is nothing like what you call the violent, rough stuff of the old days," he said.<\/p>\n

Despite calls to change the Rising Star criteria, the AFL confirmed that the rulings will stay the same.<\/p>\n
