The 'mystery' absence of Parramatta<\/a> back-rower Ryan Matterson has been solved, with the Eels star unlikely to return for the remainder of the season.<\/p>\n

Sydney Morning Herald\ufeff reporter Michael Chammas revealed Matterson has undergone a series of neurological examinations, as he battles through symptoms of headaches and dizziness that have prevented him from returning to the field for the past three weeks.<\/p>\n

The 29-year-old has been absent from the Eels line since round 10, where he suffered a head knock with teammate Blaize Talagi against the Brisbane Broncos<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Matterson was replaced in the 58th minute and was not ordered to undergo a head injury assessment. <\/p>\n

Replays of the incident show what appears to be harmless head clash with Talagi, while the pair were defending their line.<\/p>\n

The Eels have been left to try and identify the moment that triggered Matterson's health issues.<\/p>\n

The club \ufeffhave been coy about his availability since withdrawing him from the game in round 11, stating that he is out due to illness.<\/p>\n

Sources, who have elected to speak under the condition of anonymity, told Chammas that Matterson has yet to return due to ongoing concerns about his history with concussion.<\/p>\n

"He hasn't been available for the past three weeks and the club has said he has been out due to illness," Chammas said on Nine.<\/em><\/p>\n

"He's had a series of neurological examinations over the past few weeks and there are concerns that he is suffering from a bout of dizziness and headaches.<\/p>\n

"He's had a history of concussion-related issues and he hasn't played for Parramatta since round 10. He's still feeling the effects of a head knock with Blaize Talagi.<\/p>\n

"It's a week-to-week proposition and any time he gets close to playing, he suffers from those headaches and dizziness."<\/p>\n

Matterson reportedly parted ways with the Wests Tigers in 2020 due to a disagreement with the club over how he should be treated for a concussion, according to the Herald.<\/p>\n

He also missed a number of games in the blue and yellow jersey in 2022 due to concussion concerns.<\/p>\n

He is renowned for taking extreme precautions, given the extensive amount of material available for players regarding the long term effects of head knocks.<\/p>\n

The back rower was named in the extended squad by interim coach Trent Barrett for last week's clash agains the Sharks, but was scratched from the team just 11 hours before kick off.<\/p>\n

Matterson's update follows news on Eels winger Bailey Simonsson, who is battling a potential season-ending injury after suffering up a partial tear to his ACL.<\/p>\n

"Bailey Simonsson unfortunately picked up a partial tear of his ACL on Thursday night and that could mean his season is over," Chammas said.<\/p>\n

"If he does require surgery, that could be season over."<\/p>\n
