Rob Burrow, a former rugby league<\/a> star who was widely praised for his fundraising campaigns after being diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease in 2019, has died. He was 41.<\/p>\n

Leeds Rhinos<\/a> announced his death on Monday morning.<\/p>\n

Burrow spent his entire career at the English rugby league club and helped them win eight Super League titles.<\/p>\n

He retired in 2017 and two years later it was revealed Burrow had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as motor neurone disease (MND).<\/p>\n

He went on to raise millions to help build a new care centre for ALS patients alongside former teammate Kevin Sinfield.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is with deep sadness that we announce the death of our beloved son, husband, father, brother and friend," Leeds said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cRob has always been a true inspiration throughout his life whether that was on the rugby league field or during his battle with MND.<\/p>\n

"For those who knew Rob throughout his life, his determination and spirit in the face of MND over the last four and a half years came as no surprise.<\/p>\n

\u201cRob never accepted that he couldn\u2019t do something. He just found his way of doing it better than anyone else."<\/p>\n

Burrow ended his career in 2017 with a premiership win at Old Trafford.<\/p>\n

His coach at the time, Brian McDermott, praised the league great who was one of the shortest in the game – but one of the most courageous.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Rob will be remembered as one of the greats of our game, not just in the Super League era but throughout the history of the sport," McDermott said.<\/p>\n

Burrow played 492 games for Leeds, won eight grand finals, three World Club Challenges and two Challenge Cups, as well as 15 England and five Great Britain caps.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
