In a shock move, Meyer Shank Racing has benched Tom Blomqvist for the next two IndyCar<\/a> races after crashing out of the Indianapolis 500<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The son of WRC legend Stig Blomqvist will miss the forthcoming Detroit Grand Prix on June 3 and the Grand Prix at Road America which follows a week later on June 10.<\/p>\n

In his rookie season, the 30-year-old Englishman sits 24th in the drivers' standings and is at risk of missing the Leaders Circle.<\/p>\n

Stan Sport is the only place to watch the 2024 IndyCar Series.<\/strong><\/em> All the action streaming ad free, live and on demand<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

The top 22 finishers in the series are paid $1.5 million in prize money.<\/p>\n

Blomqvist's teammate Felix Rosenqvist is ninth in the points with only one finish outside the top 10 this season.<\/p>\n

Rosenqvist has a season-best fourth at Alabama and a pole position to his name while Blomqvist's best finish is 15th in the St Petersburg season opener.<\/p>\n

Blomqvist will be replaced by IndyCar Series veteran and four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Despite the axing, Meyer Shank Racing said Blomqvist is still part of the organisation.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Making this decision was by far the hardest one we have had to make," said team co-owner Mike Shank.<\/p>\n

"Tom is 100 percent still a part of the MSR family and will remain a part of the team for the rest of the season.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"The decision was not made lightly and after much discussion with Tom, and with back-to-back races coming up, we have decided to have Helio drive in Detroit and at Road America."<\/p>\n

Blomqvist said his crash in the Indianapolis 500 was a "silly error" after two weeks of preparation for the race.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"It is fair to say that the last couple of days have been some of the hardest in my career," said Blomqvist.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Everyone who knows me knows how much I love being a part of the MSR family and together we have enjoyed some amazing successes and victories.<\/p>\n

"I am looking forward to remaining part of the MSR family and contributing to the MSR vision as we chase down further successes in the future."<\/p>\n

As it stands, Blomqvist will return to the series for the Grand Prix of Monterey at Laguna Seca on June 23.<\/p>\n

Blomqvist was promoted to the team's IndyCar program this year full-time after winning the 24 Hours of Daytona in the IMSA SportsCar Championship.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
