T\ufeffhe AFL<\/a> has instructed umpires to immediately change the way they officiate the holding the ball rule.<\/p>\n

The in-season change comes after mountains of criticism against the league\ufeff for allowing ball-carriers much more time than usual to dispose of the ball, leading to less tackles being rewarded with free kicks.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month football icon Leigh Matthews told Nine the rule "doesn't exist anymore"<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\ufeffSEN's Sam Edmund on Wednesday revealed the AFL has made the "significant and rare" mid-season change, and the league issued a media release shortly after confirming as much.<\/p>\n

The leagu\ufeffe statement revealed umpires were coached about the change on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n

"It has become clearer throughout the season that in discharging their duty of care whilst executing a tackle, tacklers are positively electing not to take tackled players to ground in the tackle or are generally doing so in a reasonable way including by not using excessive force.<\/p>\n

"As a consequence, we are seeing players hold onto the ball slightly longer and challenging the definition of 'reasonable time'.<\/p>\n

"Our umpires are clear on the interpretation of holding the ball and it continues to be a focus of umpire coaching each week.<\/p>\n

"We want to ensure our clubs, coaches and players understand the rules and how they are being officiated.<\/p>\n

"Examples were provided to clubs clarifying one aspect of holding the ball – reasonable time."<\/p>\n

Commentators and fans have been crying out for weeks for the game to clarify the rule.<\/p>\n

"Those who watch a lot of football, you would know that in the last month they changed the rule about holding the ball," Matthews told Nine's Footy Furnace<\/em> recently.<\/p>\n

"It seems like it doesn't exist anymore – unless it's a rundown tackle, then you might get it.<\/p>\n

"I think something's changed, (but) why has it changed? Who's instigated the change?"<\/p>\n
