Nearly three months on from the racism saga that earned him an eight-game suspension<\/a>, Spencer Leniu has publicly broken his silence.<\/p>\n

The NRL came down hard on the three-time premiership player, who was playing his first match for the Roosters<\/a> after leaving the Panthers.<\/p>\n

In the days after the incident, several Indigenous stars \u2013 including now-Blues teammate Nicho Hynes \ufeff\u2013 publicly condemned the slur.<\/p>\n

But on the first morning in NSW camp, \ufeffLeniu said Hynes had been nothing but welcoming, and insisted everything had been "left at the door".<\/p>\n

"The sky blue jersey is everything that matters," he told 9News.<\/p>\n

"Everyone's priority is to represent this beautiful state."<\/p>\n

Leniu hadn't spoken publicly since the incident in March.<\/p>\n

He said the saga hadn't changed how he viewed himself, but learned a lot about the people he surrounded himself with.<\/p>\n

"I don't really care what people think of me. I know who I am and those who are close to me know who I am and that's all that matters to me.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I learnt who my circle is. That's the biggest thing.<\/p>\n

"If I was to give any advice to younger kids coming up, try to find who your circle is before you come here. When you go through trials and tribulations, that's when you'll know who your circle is."<\/p>\n

Leniu suggested he hadn't yet spoken to Mam about the incident, but said he wouldn't talk publicly about it if or when he does.<\/p>\n

"No one will know when I touch base with him \u2013 it will be his story to tell if he wants to," he said.<\/p>\n

"From my end, no one will know and I'd like to keep it like that.<\/p>\n

"I don't need everyone's opinions (or the) publicity for it. I just want to say sorry to him and that's it."<\/p>\n

Leniu was also thankful to the Roosters for supporting him through the ban, and said he's unlikely to ever leave Bondi as a result.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"They were there by my side, and I couldn't see myself in any other club but the Roosters," he said.<\/p>\n
