Australian Max Purcell\ufeff<\/a> added to Australia's misery at Roland-Garros<\/a>, blowing six match points after staging a huge comeback in his loss to German qualifier Henri Squire in the first round.<\/p>\n

Purcell's loss left Australia 0-6 to begin the second Grand Slam of the year, but the Sydney player's defeat would have burnt that much more considering he had a chance to advance to the next round in the 2-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(10) loss.<\/p>\n

He failed to convert four match points when serving at 5-4 in the fifth set but then, having broken Squire again to serve at 6-5, earned a fifth match point, only to botch it after serving underarm.<\/p>\n

When asked if there was any regrets about that bizarre decision, the Aussie denied it was \ufeffimpulsive.<\/p>\n

'I do it a lot in practice, it's worth going for it – absolutely,' Purcell said.<\/p>\n

"No regrets \u2013 hindsight's a shit thing, isn't it?"<\/p>\n

"(I will) just take the positives and learn from them. I hate living in the past. I just try to semi-forget about it and take the positives. I could have been out of there in three sets instead of five, so it's nice to get some extra court time.<\/p>\n

"I played so many worse points throughout that match and won those points compared to how I played some of those match points. So I can't go out there and say, like, I played seven shit points to get all match points.<\/p>\n

"I played some shit points and he still gave them to me. So, for me, there's no such thing as a mistake. Everything I've learned and I've done up to that point is why I've made that decision (to serve underarm). So there's no wrong decisions. It's just the way the cookie crumbles."<\/p>\n

While Purcell may have made a calculated decision to serve underarm on match point, there's no denying it backfired.<\/p>\n

Squire read the short serve and capitalised, getting up to the ball swiftly and taking charge of the point. Purcell then served a double fault and hit a backhand wide to lose his advantage, taking the contest into a super tiebreaker.<\/p>\n

In a tight finish, Purcell fought back and rescued two match points after falling behind in the tiebreaker before earning a sixth match point of his own, which the German saved. It was then a backhand into the net from the Aussie that gave the match away.<\/p>\n

When asked how he would deal with the loss, he said: "I'll go practice tomorrow, then doubles the next day. The game keeps going, it's fine.<\/p>\n

"I'm proud of the way that I fought, I should have walked off with the spoils, but that's tennis, it's a shit sport, you don't always win when you're winning."<\/p>\n

Meantime,\ufeff Daria Saville, Australia's top-ranked female, went down to world No.15 Jasmine Paolini , 6-3, 6-4, cementing a piece of unwanted history, with it being the first time an Australian female won't be competing in round two of the French Open since 1997.<\/p>\n

"I felt like the whole match was actually a lot closer than maybe the scoreline suggested, with a lot of deuce games," Saville said.<\/p>\n

"Although she was hurting me with her forehand a lot, I still felt on the baseline rallies, we were head-to-head."<\/p>\n

"Obviously, I'm not happy with the way I served, I gave her a lot of free points. It cost me, especially in the first set."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
