Kyle Larson was prepared for the worst-case scenario in his bid to complete motorsport's audacious "Double"<\/a> but admits the reality of it happening made for one of the worst days of his career.<\/p>\n

The NASCAR Cup Series<\/a> full-timer attempted to complete what is considered one of the toughest feats in US motorsport, contesting the Indianapolis 500<\/a> before flying two hours to race in the Coca-Cola 600 immediately after.<\/p>\n

The 1100-mile (1337km) epic has previously been attempted 10 times by five drivers but only completed once in full by Tony Stewart in 2001.<\/p>\n

Stan Sport is the only place to watch the 2024 IndyCar Series.<\/strong><\/em> All the action streaming ad free, live and on demand<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

The two races aren't the only consideration, with six days of practice, three days of qualifying, and an exhibition race in the middle.<\/p>\n

This year, Larson became the first person since Kurt Busch in 2014 to attempt the Double.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Expectations were high for NASCAR's most popular driver, having qualified inside the top six for the Indianapolis 500.<\/p>\n

However, his bid was undone when rain delayed the Indianapolis 500 and pushed the finish of the race into the start of the Coca-Cola 600.<\/p>\n

The McLaren pilot finished 18th in the Indianapolis 500 after running inside the top 10 for the lion's share of the day before copping a drive-through penalty for speeding in the pit lane.<\/p>\n

Despite missing the start of the NASCAR race, Larson flew to Charlotte Motor Speedway in hopes of driving the No.5 car in the final leg.<\/p>\n

In a cruel twist, rain struck the speedway just as Larson arrived and the race was red-flagged and ultimately never restarted with 50 laps to go.<\/p>\n

"What I thought could be one of the best days of my life quickly turned into one of the most disappointing ones I've ever experienced," Larson wrote on social media.<\/p>\n

"I hate it for Rick Hendrick, Jeff Gordon, HAG, Hendrick Motorsports, everyone a part of the 5 team, everyone on the 17 IndyCar for speeding, my family, my friends, my fans, and the documentary crew that has followed along the journey the past eight months.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"So much time, money, and effort went into this experience and it just kills me to have it all end the way it did. I feel like I let so many people down. We knew all along weather could throw a wrench into things but seeing it come to reality is a horrible feeling."<\/p>\n

Larson was awarded the Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year title following the race.<\/p>\n

The NASCAR Cup Series champion hinted at the possibility of another attempt at the Double in years to come.<\/p>\n

"Up until Sunday it was truly one of the greatest experiences of my life," he added.<\/p>\n
