Scott McLaughlin<\/a> says he can't help but feel selfish after failing to convert pole position into victory in the Indianapolis 500<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Team Penske driver led the most laps of any driver with 66 of the 200-lap distance but faded in the final stanza of the race.<\/p>\n

McLaughlin slipped down the order in the second-to-last round of pit stops and with 50 laps to go found himself in seventh.<\/p>\n

His teammate Josef Newgarden set the wheels in motion for his drive to victory on the final race restart when he shot from eighth to fourth.<\/p>\n

McLaughlin, meanwhile, couldn't make much headway and ultimately settled for sixth.<\/p>\n

"It was pretty intense, the fuel saving and whatnot," said McLaughlin.<\/p>\n

"All the yellows at the start made that happen. It was hard. You wanted to play it safe and save the fuel but you didn't want to get caught up and fall too far back.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Maybe needed a little bit more balance here and there but it's my fourth time here, best result yet.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"It's hard not to feel selfish \u2013 congrats to Team Penske \u2013 but this place, you just want to do it for yourself. I'm proud of the team."<\/p>\n

McLaughlin's race wasn't helped by a finicky clutch, that slowed him out of pit lane.<\/p>\n

"It's a lot of things go down to the end," said McLaughlin.<\/p>\n

"Congrats to Josef, firstly. Hell of a drive just bombed Pato around the outside of three. Gigantic, humongous things to do that."<\/p>\n

"For me, we had a clutch drama all day unfortunately. That's just how it is," he added<\/p>\n

"Ultimately, I'm just glad for the fans. They got a full race in and that's exactly what we want to see at Indianapolis. The full 200 laps.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"We were up there all day but just didn't quite have enough."<\/p>\n
