As Pato O'Ward climbed out of his cockpit, the McLaren driver slumped forward as the reality sunk in. For the second time in three years, he'd finished second in the Indy 500<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In 2022, he was runner-up to Marcus Ericsson. In 2023, he crashed eight laps short of the finish while running third. This year, he lost to Josef Newgarden in another thrilling finish<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As O'Ward melted into the frame of his car, his McLaren crew came to comfort him \u2013 including team CEO Zak Brown.<\/p>\n

"It's just hard to put it into words," said O'Ward on Stan Sport's coverage.<\/p>\n

"I'm proud of the work we did today. We recovered, we went back, we went forward, we went back.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Some people were just driving like maniacs. We had so many near race-enders. Just so close again, so f—– close."<\/p>\n

O'Ward fought a loose car all race long. At one point, he pulled off an incredible save in turn two that threatened to end his day early.<\/p>\n

"I put that car through things I never thought it was going to be able to do," he said.<\/p>\n

"Sometimes I said, 'Oh, that's it' and somehow I came out the other side of the corner.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Oh man. This is so painful when you put so much into it. Two corners short.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"It's always a heartbreak whenever you're so close, especially when it's not the first time.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"You just don't know how many opportunities that you have."<\/p>\n

In the post-race press conference, O'Ward said it would take him a "few hours" to calm down.<\/p>\n

"I feel very proud of what I did today, I really do," said O'Ward.<\/p>\n

"It's just after all that work and all those\u2026 just very risky kind of choices that I had to make in order to put myself in that position, it's just like, 'Oh'.<\/p>\n

"It just stings to not be able to just finish it. But it is what it is. I know we'll be there next year."<\/p>\n

O'Ward's teammate Alexander Rossi was left similarly upset at the finish of the race.<\/p>\n

He fought Newgarden in the dying stages of the race but fell back to fourth by the chequered flag having needed save fuel.<\/p>\n

"That was the undoing of it," he said of the late conservation.<\/p>\n

"The fuel number I had to hit, I couldn't lead. When you get third in line in this pack\ufeffage… forever, it's just been very difficult to get runs especially at the end of the race when everyone is pretty much flat out.<\/p>\n

"Even though with three laps to go we were pretty good on fuel, once you're third in line the track position is gone. At that point, I was cheering for the (O'Ward) car.<\/p>\n

"It was an amazing month and it's really hard when you come away from this event not thinking you should have changed anything and the result still isn't there.<\/p>\n

"I look back and there's nothing through this month that I would have\ufeff done differently. The car was great and when you can't win with that it's a tough pill to swallow."<\/p>\n
