Every year Formula 1<\/a> races around the tight and twisty streets of Monaco and every year drivers complain of how boring the racing is.<\/p>\n

The Monaco Grand Prix<\/a> may well be the crown jewel event of the season but Sunday's race is often determined by the results of Saturday's qualifying.<\/p>\n

Of the last 20 races in Monaco, only six have been won by drivers not starting from pole position.<\/p>\n

As safety levels increase and the cars get bigger as a result, passing has become almost impossible around the principality.<\/p>\n

This year's race was no different and perhaps even worse than years before.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Almost all jeopardy was taken out of the race when the action was red-flagged on lap one.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Drivers must use two tyre compounds in-race. However, a quirk of the F1 rule book meant the red flag allowed drivers to change their tyres and fulfil that requirement.<\/p>\n

All of the front-runners who started on the medium compound switched to the hard compound and raced until the end without completing a pit stop.<\/p>\n

Charles Leclerc wound up winning the race at a pedestrian pace for Ferrari, backing up McLaren's Oscar Piastri to the point where he couldn't complete a pit stop without falling into the clutches of fifth-placed George Russel of Mercedes.<\/p>\n

First through ninth place finished the race where they started. Max Verstappen, who started his Red Bull in sixth and finished in sixth, couldn't hide his frustration.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I think George and I are going to go for a run because we didn't really have any exercise," he laughed, speaking with Viaplay.<\/p>\n

"My god. That was terrible. So boring."<\/p>\n

Russell chimed in, "My tyres were going. I was scared we were going to lose the tyres because we were driving so slow.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"We need to do something, they need to change something. Compulsory pit stops. Mandatory pit stop."<\/p>\n

Verstappen joked, "Mandatory nap."<\/p>\n

In an all-in media opportunity, Verstappen explained his frustrations.<\/p>\n

"After the red flag our strategy was a bit ruined because then we had to put the medium to the end, everyone had a free stop," Verstappen said.<\/p>\n

"That meant we had to save a lot, just try to follow George. We were massively off the pace trying to manage the tyre.<\/p>\n

"It's quite boring out there. You're driving literally half throttle on the straights, some places a gear higher than you would normally do. Four seconds off the pace more or less, that's not really racing."<\/p>\n

In the days before the race, Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton suggested changes be made to the format to add jeopardy.<\/p>\n

"They should come up with some new \u00adformula for it rather than it just be the same," he said.<\/p>\n

"Do you guys not fall asleep on Sunday watching the race? The cars are \u00adgetting bigger. You can't really overtake without the risk of colliding.<\/p>\n

"I wish we had more, bigger roads and the track could be wider, but I don't think that's ever going to be the case in Monaco because it's just a small place.<\/p>\n

"I would say maybe \u00adspecial tyres for this race, so you have more pit stops that create more variability."<\/p>\n
